Default Wanted: KMC Models 1:72 Boeing 727-223 American Airlines kit

I used to have this wonderful kit, It's hard to build, but rewarding. I donated mine last year to my A&P school for training aid. So i'm looking for another one to put my Braniff decals on.

Well, almost 6 years later, I finally scored another KMC 727-200 kit!

I used my 1/400 TWA 727-231 as a gauge so you can see how big this monster really is!

Where did you find this behemoth? I just managed to acquire a Doyusha/Nitto 1/100 scale 727 off of ebay, got lucky with that one!

I've become mesmerized by larger scale models. I am currently working on the Welsh Models 1/72 scale ERJ-135.

I acquired it from a fellow collector, in exchange for a Minicraft Delta DC-8-71 kit.

Wow...those KMC kits are rare as hen's teeth. Good score. Sure beats those nasty Airfix kits.

I only built 2 Airfix 727-200 kits, pain in the arse they were! The new 1/144 Minicraft 727-200 is a marked improvement over the Airfix three-holer.

Minicraft's DC-8-60/70 kits are superb I might add! Have 2 of them on the bench in progress now, trying to get them finished in time for an IPMS contest in April.

KMC also released a 1/72 pushback tug, though it was right before they folded, so it's equally, if not more rarer than the 727.

I thought so.

This one will not wear AA colors. Going to have custom DL black-nose widget, or CO meatball decals made for it, and may send the wings out to have the slats n' flaps dropped.

I think either one will look fabulous!

Last year I had Brad make me a 1/144 727-100 in the Red Meatball colors, complete with flaps and slats dropped...she looked (and still does) AWESOME! I believe he used the Authentic Airliners resin kit for that build. I have to say getting that done is what got me back into modelling, I take it far more seriously now and do much better than when I was a young'un with zero patience!

I just got in the mail today that 1/100 727 kit. Since I have a red meatball already, I'm probably going to do it in a delta livery unless I can find some other livery that is attractive (I would do AA, but no airbrush, and I think the canned silver paint looks crap...unless I am using the wrong one).

Now if I can just find some decent decals for a 1/100 DC-9-41!

Try Tamiya's "AS-12" spray can. That is "Bare Metal Silver" and it is far superior to any other metallic spray out there. It is not the common generic Tamiya silver or chrome or aluminum spray paint you'll find at most hobby stores selling Tamiya, it's in their separate "aircraft spray" line. Hunt it down and try it, many people rate it second only to airbrushed hand-polished Alclad. And 10x easier to work with.

Really? I'll certainly look for it and give it a shot! My local hobby store has quite an assortment of tamiya sprays...Looks like their entire 'regular' line plus a host of aircraft/military colors. If I can't find it there, I'm sure I can find an online retailer selling it. Thanks for that hint! Now I can do a retro AA 722!

When trying to replicate bare metal, it always helps to have gloss black enamel as a primer layer.

I use SNJ Aluminum. It comes pre-thinned, and is airbrush use only. The kit I buy comes with 2 bottles of paint, jar of polishing compound, and buffing cloth. This is just as good as the Alclad paint, as it can be sprayed on as-is, polished, or dulled to give a nice contrast if you desire. I'm very happy with SNJ, and recommend it.

Heya David H and David M

Unfortunately the SNJ is out for me, as I don't have an airbrush, but I certainly will take a note of it to try it out once I get one.

I'll finally make it to the hobby shop tomorrow and look for that AS-12, then I can move that kit build to the top of the heap and do that next!

Thanks for all the tips guys, definately opened up some new opportunities for me!

Black enamel is good for a base, just have to let it dry a long time. I've had good success with acrylic gunship gray primer.

This is a far stretch! they had this model last time I was at Threshold aviation in Toronto. Look them up on the internet. This is NOT aviation world.

Good Luck.
