Does anybody here have any German siku models from the early 60s in his collection? They had some interesting subject matter and this brand's quality has always been high.

I have'nt the Siku models in my collection but a french collector I know have some models for selling or trading. If you are interesting, I can give you his list and his adress. About plastic models, do you know the Eko 1/150 models from Spain. They have made many interesting models like the Dornier Wal, the Me 110C, etc. They comes assembled with decals, in a card box. These models were produced in the 60' - 70'. I have some of them for trading. Philippe. |

About ten years ago I saw some Condor Flugdienst B767-200 models produced by Siku sold in Indonesia. Since I was collecting 1:600 Schabak, I ignored them. Now I am curious about Siku's products: are they in 1:500 scale ? Because when I saw it, the size was almost as big as Herpa's.

In the 60's Siku issued a wide variety of aircraft models, all made of plastic and all made of scale 1/250. (They did plastic car toys as well during that time).
By the time SIKU changed to metal models, but concentrated on cars (1/55) and agricultural models (1/32). In the early 90's they did a seperate small Series of 1/500 Airliners in parallel to the upcoming Herpas: 767-200, L-1011, 747 and A340. Those line was an attempt to intrude into the Herpa-business, but it failed. So it remained at those models, production was stopped already several years ago. The old plastic models of scale 1/250 are still most interesting for collectors, while the newer Series of 1/500 models is practically without any meaning. It is to be pointed out, that SIKU also offered airport buildings of scale 1/250 for the according models, such as radar station, tower, hangar, terminal buildings, etc. SIKU is one of the few company, where the plastic models are much more important than the metal models. |

Last month I purchased a plastic Siku Lufthansa Viscount. This is a nicely-done plane that is smaller than the Dinky Toy and more or less the price of an AeroClassic model. It's 1:250. A toy seller had it displayed sitting almost on the ground next to two, fairly recent, beaten-up die cast jets - I've forgotten what make they were. All stickers and props are intact, and it has metal wheels. The registration is D-ANUN.

I too have a collection of 1:250 Siku airliners. They are really cute and reflect the period of the late 1950's and early 60's so well. The Starliner is my favourite of course! But I have to say that DC-8 is great (sits nose down beautifully) CV880 Swissair and Delta is surely a most unusual choice for that period (well done Siku for being so bold).
The buildings and hangars and airport playmat are terrific. Also made were passenger steps, fire engine, refuelling truck and the smallest ambulance you'll ever find (you can hardly see it with my eyesight! I may part with it all one day. Happy collecting. I hold only one CV440 from the Czechian pruducer in the early 90th ...
Only decal no painting... done by my self Swissair ... I know the originals Siku very well, as I was collecting all civil airlines life in the early 60th .... by pocket money ....but Mother has destroyed all of them.... as I wrote again and again bad notes in the school ![]() I remember very well : Super Star LH /TWA ,DC-6 Sabena,DC-7 Swissair,Alitalia, DC-8 KLM,707 PAA, CV880 TWA ,CV440 Lufthansa,Swissair,L-188 KLM, F-27 AerLingus... rest meanwhile cant remember ![]() |

Hi conny-fan. The SIKU range is cute but by today's standard a little crude. I have all the airliners in my collection. However, I would like duplicates of my favourite airliners.

I finally bought a SIKU Tupolev TU 104 from a dealer in Germany which I'm anxiously awaiting. I wish it were made of metal instead of plastic but it's the only small scale example I've been able to find of this aircraft. I'm trying to complete my collection which consists of all jet airliner types representative of the 50s through 70s in European or American liveries. I'm still searching for the following aircraft: Trident HS 121, YAK 40, Dassault Mercure and if I'm really dreaming big, I could add the AVRO C 102, VFW 614 and Baade 152. The last three airliners never really made it into any significant production numbers.

I hope you like the 104. The 6 aircraft you're looking for could prove tough to find, but my guess is that somebody will make a Trident sonner or later especially in 1:400.
I think remember seeing a 1:200 Trident in the range by Brian Tomkins many years ago. Solid white metal and resembled a painted door stop. Can't be sure though. GB |

Thanks. I've seen some decent examples of the Trident, Yak 40 as well as Mercure (all Air Inter livery) in the 1:200 scale which is a little larger than what I'm collecting but thanks for the suggestion. I agree, those other aircraft are so obscure, I would doubt that most people would even know of their original existence. I understand that Howard Hughes liked the Avro C 102so well that he bought one. It has great lines and good speed for the time period. If Canada had produced it in larger numbers it would have given the French a great deal of competition with their Caravelle. On the other hand the Baade 152 was a supremely ugly attempt on East Germany's part to demonstrate national pride, however the prototypes had some significant problems (crashes) and the plane was scrapped- but then what would you expect from the people that produced the Trabant? The VFW 614 was manufactured in West Germany and faired much better, however, I for one would be a little nervous about flying in a plane that had jet engines mounted on top of the wings. Nevertheless, I pretty novel idea.

I nice Super Connie pic in Lufthansa livery I found. There's a great restored one in TWA livery that comes to the Air Show in Willow Grove, PA during the summer. It's a beauty!!!! Enjoy.

Thanks for the Lufthansa Super Star pic. Can you imagine 10 to 12 hours trans Atlantic with real cutlery and crystal gl***** ? And of course the gents would wear a jacket and tie and the ladies would have gloves ! And undoubtably they'd be very rich.
