Unhappy Triple Whammy

Well, guys ... this week for me is a case of Triple Whammy!

1. Today would have been my dad's 62nd birthday.

2. Friday the 13th will be the 6 month anniversary of his death - seems like just yesterday that I had created a thread about it. Meanwhile, it was back on December 13th.

3. Sunday the 15th is Father's Day - have been seeing non stop commercials on tv for this too! Difficult to see/hear/watch.

Anyhow, I was fine earlier this morning and at the moment I'm not - plus PMS'ing which isn't helping matters. Some days, there's just not enough chocolate! >

For the past 6 months, for the most part I've been good/ok. Sometimes I'll see a company truck drive by that he used to work for and feel sad. Other days, I miss being able to pick up the phone and call him to say Hi and also miss hearing the phone ring and it's him calling me spontaneously just to tell me a joke.

I will always remember that my dad was the first person to ever take me to the rooftop of the old T1 at YYZ and show me the world (the airfield). It was truly a case of "love at first sight" so my dad was the one that started up my love of aviation, airplanes, airports, etc. I always think about my dad while spotting at YYZ and smile ... part of him will always be there with me! He's also the first person that took me to a Leafs game and my love of hockey started up!

R.I.P. Dad ... it's taken me 6 months to be able to say this!!!!!!!
I Love You and Miss You!

Jo-Anne

(sorry guys ... this thread truly not meant to be a bummer or downer).

Jo,

Although this Sunday will be hard for you I hope that you can focus on some of the great memories of your Dad that you've shared with us. It sounds like you two shared alot of great moments together and I'm sure he would want you to celebrate those good times on Sunday. Hang in there!

Thank You.

My dad will always be "with me" at the airport! Also, I still remember stuff like he's the one that taught me how to ride a bike and how to rollerskate! and how he'd wake up the whole family early in the morning singing along at the top of his voice to Elvis Presley songs. > this one brings back really funny and happy memories!

Not only did my dad give me the gift of love of aviation, hockey, etc. but also the gift of being a really great and protective dad - he was always there for me!

Jo, three years ago to the day, 6-9-05, I walked into the terminal at Page, AZ to find out one of my best friends and fellow employees, Perry Grant, died after falling asleep while flying cargo from KSLC to KDGO. He hit Mt. Wilson, the mountain on the Coors Light can. 4 hours later, I recieved a call that my father had died. Two close people, same day. As luck would have it, Perry's memorial was the same day as my fathers funeral. I had to miss Perry's memorial to attend my fathers funeral. I hate this day.

My father also gave me the gift of Aviation and Hockey. Weird. He drove me to every single practice, and was the only dad who stayed. As I got older, our favorite thing was to go watch the Utah Grizzlies play. Every saturday was "airport day" We would drive all around KSLC, and watch the planes for hours. He helped me with all of my ratings, and was always my co-pilot when we would fly up to Idaho to buy Lotto tickets...he was just helping me build my time. Lotto tickets were the excuse.

I carry a little mini-urn with me in my flight bag so he is always with me when I go flying...I also mixed in some of his ashes in the silver paint of my new goalie mask, so he can still watch his boy play.

Sorry for your loss Jo, I know exactly how you feel.

Dylan ... I am truly sorry about the loss of both your father and your best friend/co-worker (truly a horrible death!) on the same day!!! You would have already been in shock about your friend when you received the call about your dad!!! Very sad! Double Whammy in one day!

Very cool regarding your dad! Sounds like he was a super great guy and you both really enjoyed spending time together too which is excellent!

Wow, that is really something else regarding mini-urn and ashes in silver paint of new goalie mask. That is really neat actually! My dad was cremated and his ashes are in an urn at my stepmom's place.

Thank You, Dylan. Sadly, Yes - you do know exactly how I'm feeling! and I almost can't stand to watch any tv this week as it's non stop Father's Day commercials which is just making me sad.

Hi Jo and Dylan, well for me its 6-19, thats the day my mum died. Its a real bummer, cos its also a very close friend's birthday too, and ive never hung out with her on her birthday. Funnily enough, it was my mum (and my aunties) who took me to Prestwick Airport for the first time, in 1972.
Jo, hope u r hangin in there and somewhere deep down, I know exactly how you are both feeling.

Default Triple Whammy and numbers

..... There are coincidences all through life and it's all just coincidence. Here's one out of my coincidences file:
  1. My day died at age 71. I was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt which had a hull number of 71.
  2. My mother died at age 62. I was station with a Navy SeaBee unit, NMCB 62.
  3. Coincidence... I was in NMCB 62 when my dad died and on the USS Theodore Roosevelt when my mother died. Real coincidence, but they're just numbers.
..... I think that's why numbers get our attention so readily is that they come up over and over again. Everyone in my sister's family was born on the 18th! My number in all the sports I ever played was 18 (and I never requested it once, just given to me). A whole pseudoscience of numerology was established to feed that.
..... There are so many stories why 13 is an unlucky number in the West. The one I find most credible is that Judas was the 13th guest at the last supper, but that's just me. Again, only a number.
..... Anyways Jo, remember your dad. He lives on in your memory. One of the things I think about with both my parents is now how much I didn't know about them (like how they met for example). That always comes when it is too late to ask.

Thank You for your posting. Ouch ... June 19th coming up soon too. I'm truly sorry to read about the death of your mother. It is SO difficult to deal with the death of a parent! Sad also that it happened on your friend's birthday. Have you ever tried celebrating her birthday the day before or day after - or is that still too close to the date? December hasn't been very good as my maternal grandmother died Dec. 2005 just before Christmas and then my dad on Dec. 13/07 also just before Christmas. It's really starting to take away happiness from that time of year for me! My dad is the first one to take me to the airport but it's actually my mom that took me on my first flight in 1976!

Having a good and busy day today!

Jo

Dave ... Thank You for your posting. I'm truly sorry to read about the death of your parents. A lot of forum members have lots mothers, fathers or both!

Wow, that's quite a list of "coincidences"! Everyone in my mom's family has early April birthdays - but that's just due to "Summer Lovin'" 9 months earlier! hehe.

Friday the 13th is usually a good/happy/lucky day for me but this week's will have a tinge of sadness to it.

The night I received the phone call about my dad's death, it was an instant feeling that I had just lost a layer of protection surrounding me and in my life. And you're right ... there are SO many things I wish I had asked him about while he was still alive and healthy. There are some questions that even my mom and stepmom don't have any answers to.

My dad definitely lives on in my memory and in my heart!

Jo
