I didn't understand it either..but the best that I can figure is that someone out there had the Spitfires, but no box. Does it improve the overall value of antiques to have the original box that they came with?! Or..maybe it's just a box collector! Either way, hats off to the seller who turned a few bucks selling on Ebay!

Erm, guys, there has been a small market for this kind of thing with model railways for years. If, say, you buy something second hand but don't have the box, or if the box was discarded long ago, etc etc. It is particularly prevalent with very old models, such as Hornby Dublo or Wrenn, or, in this case, Dinky, which are old and collectable.
Citation, I do hope you were kidding there - of COURSE having the original box improves the value of something, that's the whole point! What is there NOT to understand?? I don't get it!

But when the daily remit is multiple short hops between tiny bumpy strips in a climate that flickers from the blustery to the apocalyptic, this sturdy little craft is hard to beat.' |

We are talking here about antique toys and not the "Made in China" scrap you are usually buying.
The box on auction is a retailer box for 6 Dinky pre-war Spitfire models. If you are a serious collector of Dinky models, you would kill for such a box (in case you have the six models...). For the value of antique toys the original box is very important. It can increase the value of the toy up to 100%. I have recently seen an original box for a Dinky Vulcan selling for around 1000,- USD. Yes, 1000,- USD for some piece of old hard paper. So for collectors of antique toys, the selling and buying of original boxes is rather common. |
