You live in a beautiful country, Rafa. I've never made it to Portugal (only a stopover in the Azores, about as close as I've come), but I've always want to. My days as a world-traveler are probably over, since I have neither the time nor the money, and my wife hates flying. Hard to believe that Portugal was once a powerful sea-faring nation, with colonies around the world, behind only Spain and England. I guess we all get our turn in the sun...

Behind Spain and England? No way...
Portugal was the first and only Global Empire during some time...
Then Spain started, and Portugal, Spain and the Vatican City signed the Tordesillas Treaty:

Half the world to Portugal, and half to Spain!
The Pope said that it should be the yellow line, but Portugal wanted the blue line (in 1494). This Portuguese wish is one of the proves that Portugal already knew about the existence of Brazil even before 1500!

Portugal was the first ones to reach countries like India, Japan, Brazil, Australia, ...

Then Brazil became independent, and in 1974, unfortunately, our african colonies became independent in the worst way possible... Even today some of them are still in war...

Brazil and Angola will be two of the most powerfull countries in the future, and i'm happy about that!

Azores are the most beautifull Islands in the world!!

gospodin you should try to come visit the most beautiful country in Europe

Great to hear that!
Are you from Venezuela?! Portugal has a large community there! And the Portuguese prime-minister was in Venezuela this week! The Portugal-Venezuela relationships are getting bigger!

By the way, I know that a lot of foreign people like to hear some fado music (the traditional music of Portugal)...

YouTube - Mariza @ David Letterman's Show
This is video is from Mariza... the best fado singer nowadays!
This video is from the David Letterman's Show, filmed in her last US Tour, last year. As you probably know, the Late Show with David Letterman is an American TV talk show.

And for all the spanish-speaking people here, this video is from Mariza and Miguel Poveda (singer of flamenco, from one of the most similar countries with Portugal: Catalunya):

Great history lesson, Rafa. What I meant was that Portugal was the third largest empire in Europe during the Great Expansion (1500-1700), when all the powers in Europe were competing for empires around the world.

I don't think Empires can be "ranked"...

The Portuguese was the first and the longest lived of the Empires (from 1415 until 1999)... And a map that shows the strenght of the Empire is this (its missing the discovery of Australia...)

Nowadays, the "Portuguese Empire" is present in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe, Brazil, East Timor, Portugal, Equatorial Guinea and Mauritius!

But let's move to the future!
Some beautiful projects that are rising in Lisbon:

Near the Alvalade XXI Stadium:

Somewhere in Lisbon:

Cascais:

Colombo Mall:

In the Vasco da Gama Tower, Parque das Naçoes, a 5* Hotel:

Compave Tower, 105 metters, in the center of Lisbon:

And also the third Tagus bridge:

Ok, ok, didn't mean to get you defensive about Portuguese history. I love the pictures that you've been sending, kind of a travelogue of your wonderful country. It would be great to one day visit there, but for now I'll have to contend myself with pictures.

In 1516, 16 years after the discovery of Brazil, the Spanish arrived in Uruguay. Since then, the Portuguese and the Spanish wanted the territory... In 1969, the Portuguese built a fortification at Colonia del Sacramento!
Since then Uruguay was a Spanish region... then a Portuguese region.... then a Portuguese region... and then again a Spanish region... and then, some parts of Uruguay were conquered by Brazil..
Spain always sent people from mainland to Uruguay, because Portugal had Brazil there, and could colonize the region...

But Uruguay was a part of the Portuguese-Brazil during some time...

P.S: So am I SPOOOOOORTING!
