Hi,
My daughter is 18 years old and has her (German) driver's license. Somebody told me that she isn't allowed to drive a car in Texas. She needs to be 21 years old. As far as I know you may drive in the USA if you are allowed to drive in Germany. What is correct?

She will be in your town - Dallas!
![]() Some weeks ago my friend wanted to drive his host's car. It was in Houston. The Texan told him that he is not allowed to do this because he needs to be 21 years old. Is the host father right? Is it because my friend is German? (different law for foreigners) Was it a white lie because he was just afraid to loose his car in an accident? Can you please ask a police officer?

BTW, I prefer Dallas over Houston, and this is a good time of year to visit. Come May, it's going to be 100 degrees and 100% humidity for about five months in a row. ![]() |

My niece (then 17) was on a student exchange last year somewhere in Texas and got her driving licence there. She was even allowed to use it in Germany when she came back.
Maybe your daughter has to do another driver license test but she doesn´t have to wait until she´s 21. The 21-rule is for rented cars (and maybe an insurance thing if she is driving anybody elses car - I don´t know). |

According to this you have to be 18, not 21 to drive in Texas with a foreign license provided there is reciprocity between the two countries.
Texas DPS 1) How long can I drive with an out-of-country driver license? Generally, a person 18 to 75 years of age with a valid out-of-country driver license in their possession may drive a private, non-commercial motor vehicle in the State of Texas for up to one year from date of entry into the United States, if their home country has reciprocity with the U.S. |

Why anyone from another country would want to drive in Houston is beyond me. I drove in Germany for years, and they are much better drivers than here in the US. Of course, I drove in Italy a few times, and I can't say the same about the Italians, no offense. Houston traffic is horrible on a good day, absolutely hideous on a bad one. Dallas ain't much better.

The 2nd condition of driving in Texas is that there must be a gun rack visible through the back window. Shotgun optional.

BTW Thanks for the compliment! We still don't have a general speed limit here in Germany. I do loke it!!! ![]() Although most times it's very crowded on our Autobahns you still have the chance to enjoy takeoff speed from time to time. ![]()
