Default Australian registration??

Another silly question then - I'm more into the models than the actual planes.

Anyway, on looking at pictures and looked at a model or two, why does the likes of Ansett and Qantas aircraft have a 'VH' at the beginning of the registration??

Last time I checked, Australia had neither a 'V' or an 'H' in it (double checks the word 'Australia' at this point!). Surely something beginning with 'A' would be more apt??

Well, if you wanna get specic about it, there are reg prefixes that start with numbers, example would be Isreal's 4X, and we also have some "Special" Prefixes, like some Polish gov't helis I notice have regs starting with "SN" instead of the usual Polish "SP". Then we have to go onto the reg which I believe Bermuda has, the "VP" reg. I know that a certain leasing company has their planes registered under that (Look at some of hte Aeroflot Boeings).
