Sorry Todd, but you are confusing current Republicans with traditional "Goldwater" Republicans. Traditional Republicans believed in limited government and fiscal responsibility. Current Republicans believe in expanded government, instrusion into our private lives, massive deficits and out of control spending. Who would have thought the Democrats would become the fiscally responsible party, but that is what has occurred. By the way, if taxes need to be raised to reduce deficit spending I have no problem with that. It is irresponsible to cut taxes and increase spending - and it is unprecedented in wartime.

They haven't become the fiscally responsible party ... they haven't been in power for 12 years ... they are the party of fiscally responsible rhetoric .. time will tell if they are truly fiscally responsible ... BTW there are two ways to balance a budget ... democrats always think of raising taxes ... I believe in smaller government ... so we should cut expenditures .... not raise taxes .. this is concept that is foreign to most democrats.

BTW ... for all you democrats that think this means anything ... I have two concepts for you:

1. Veto

2. simple majority.


Now if the Blue Dog Democrats have any balls to stand up to the kooks on the left, which they don't then there might actually be some bipartisan action. But the blue dogs will chair nothing and so they will get no bills to the floor ... so in reality what is going to happen is that gridlock will occur and the status quo will continue ... the rematch will come in 2008.

Actually it's been the Republicans that have been fiscally irresponsible. The US debt to GDP ratio was declining until Reagan became president. During his terms in office this rate started to climb sharply and continued under Bush Sr. The debt stabilized under Clinton and actually started to decline in his last term. But Bush Jr reversed this trend and the debt to GDP ratio is now approaching 70%. This debt is caused by in part by cutting taxes without a corresponding decline in expenditures. This is a borrow and spend policy which is more devious than tax and spend policy because everything seems normal now, but the ****e hits the fan later when future tax payers are given the bill.

Arius, I'm surprised at your myopic views. It should be well known (especially by those who worship at the alter of John Maynard Keynes), that fiscal and monetary policy are counter cyclical tools used to stimulate and/or retard economic growth. The Reagan era deficits followed a decade of economic stagnation married with supply-push inflation. There is no doubt that Reagan's fiscal policies jump-started an economy that was circling in the bowl waiting to be flushed.

Likewise, Bush's tax cuts occurred under similar circumstances as the U.S. economy was slammed by the so-called "dot.com" bust followed by the 9/11 attacks. The fact that the economy began experiencing a meaningful recovery within 6 months of the attacks is a testament to the power of counter-cyclical fiscal policy. Fluctuations in the Debt/National Income ratio are normal.
