It is interesting to observe that most Republicans in the US government including the President are not the conservatives that they purport to be. They maybe socially conservative, but they have been far from fiscally conservative. Soon the US debt-to-GDP ratio will hit 70%. This is at the high end among the economies of the western world. These Republicans have spoken about the scourge of the "tax and spending" Democrats. However since 2000 Republicans have been "borrow and spending" the US taxpayer to the poor house. Tax and spend may not be the best fiscal policy. But borrow and spend is more sinister in that everything looks good now until future taxpayers get the bill long after the president and congress members are out of office.

I think the only problem is defining this country on being defined either conservative or liberal as associated with a Dem. or Rep.... It's almost 2007... I once heard about this Liberal Republican who let anything 'fly ' on the right hand side... and this other time I heard about this conservative Democrat who loved a liberal tradition...
