Default Any other hockey fans here?

Any other hockey fans here?

If so, tonight's game: Leafs vs Lightning and the Leafs win 4-2.

Ever so sorry Tampa Bay ... NOT!

The entire sport has gone down hill since Harold and Yolanda have left.

"The winters of my childhood were long, long seasons. We lived in three places, the school, the church and the hockey rink - but our real life was on the hockey rink." Roch Carrier.

Yes I am a hockey fan and I bleed the bleu, blanc et rouge of Les Canadiens!

I am also a hockey purist, so therefore I think it is wrong that there are NHL teams in southern US cities where the average citizen there does not know what a puck is.

Rich ... you're a cool Dude!

IKONOS ... I definitely know that you're a hockey fan! Yeah ... Go Canes GO ... as in, please Go Away! (hehe).

Mike, my friend ... don't even get me going on Ballard Scum!!!

sammyk ... anyone who is a hockey fan is alright/cool/ok with me!!! "checking" in ... no pun intended? haha.

ARIUS ... (biting tongue). Damn you (and some of my family and friends) for being Canadiens fans!!! (just teasin' ya!). Re: puck ... when this native Torontonian was a little baby girl, not only attended the Leafs games but a puck literally WAS my pacifier and I've absolutely LOVED hockey ever since - especially the fights!!! I truly feel that most Canadians are born with hockey in their blood!

No one can truly appreciate, know or understand exactly how LOUD an NHL hockey game actually is or how wild the fans get until they attend one in person!

btw - Where the heck is DR DEATH?! Calling Vince!

Don't knock the south until you've tried it!
Hockey may have traditionally been a northern sport... but with the ever growing influx of northerners to the south, it was inevitable that hockey has become so popular here. The southerners just didn't realize what they were missing all these years.
Funny though... in watching games on the tube; a lot of the northern teams arena seats are very bare, while if you have a look at the Hurricanes games... they have a packed house. Hockey has most definitely caught on in the south... especially in the Carolina's.
BTW- we know what a puck is... we've been dodging them in the grazing fields for years...

Over the long-run, I really don't think that the seats will be filled in southern arenas. At best, hockey ranks behind the NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAA, NASCAR, PGA, horse-racing. In most areas hockey ranks behind bowling, WWE, the greyhounds and probably many other "sports". Hockey is not a national sport in the US which is why there has been no adequate national US TV coverage.

The core support for these teams is very small. So whenever a southern team's on-ice performance turns poor, most of the fans will go watch and support someother local team from another sport.

Even in northern states like NY hockey ranks behind most sports. It's the same in most states except maybe Minnesota. I always hear that hockey shouldn't be in the south because people don't know anything about it. Well, how are they to learn? It is slowly but surely catching on and probably more now that there is more parity. The last two Cups have been won by Southeast teams which can only help interest in the game down there. Even when they don't win like Florida in '96 there was a ton of interest until the team was taken apart. There is a lot of interest in Dallas, especially after the Cup win and being a contender thereafter.

BTW, I am not originally from the south, I spent most of my life in NJ and therefore root for the Devils...which lost tonite.

You hit the nail right on the head. Rather than worry about national exposure immediately, the NHL should concentrate on developing a regional following for each team. Solidifying a core following will ensure the financial stability of each franchise.

Once that is complete, then you can worry about the national exposure and "facing off" for prime time against other major sporting leagues. Nascar used this strategy, and it was wildly successful.

Go "anyone but Toronto", go!

I will agree with you that it gets no national coverage down here...your second paragraph, however, is baseless and simply not true.

Oh I agree. It was always fun to watch Cujo choke and Stevens send another Leaf to the hospital

Seriously though, the two playoff rounds in 2000 and 2001 were great...well except for when Tie Dummy...I mean Domi clotheslined Niedermayer.

Yeah yeah yeah, Doug...I see how it is!

Remember, I'm not cool because I am an Oakland Raiders fan. We're worse than Satanists, apparently.
