Default Concrete or Asphalt?

In our neighborhood, one of the more contentious issues is whether to pave driveways with asphalt or concrete. I personally like asphalt. Anyone disagree?

Default yes

I agree. I have found that asphalt is easier(cheaper) to maintain.

I llike asphalt too. Per square foor, it is cheaper to install than concrete. But concrete probably lasts longer than asphalt.

Also, it is easier to clear compacted snow & ice from asphalt than concrete. Although using a grader or front-end loader to clear the snow will scrape away asphalt because it is softer than concrete.

Thanks for the responses. So what's the story on asphalt sealants. I've heard some say that it protects and prolongs the life of asphalt, while others say its just cosmetic.

It can be both. Sealcoat keeps oil and salts from penetrating the asphalt and helps keep it hard, while top dressing with a clean black. But, watch out for commercial services with really low quotes for seal coating. They dilute the sealcoat and all you are getting is a black topcoat and, sometimes, additional chemicals that can damage the asphalt.

My first Management Accounting job was with an asphalt paving company and, to cost out asphalt, you have to know differant "grades" and the ingrediants of which they are composed. Ahh, the smell of hot asphalt in the morning.

Won't gas, oil and other car fluids eat away at asphalt? I'd go for concrete.

DoesnŽt asphalt melt on hot days, and, worst case, turn into a sticky goo, messing up cars?

IŽd go concrete.

Up here on Long Island the prevailing choice is asphalt. The hot summers and cold winters will eventually cause concrete to crack, not to mention after a while it will become stained with engine oil and whatever. I have a guy seal it each year , cost about $100.00 and the driveway looks like new. Asphalt will eventually crack, but I just had mine replaced 3 years ago, the first one was put in in 1968. Good luck.
