Thumbs down NHL Shootout

Penalty shots are great during a game. A shoot out to end a game no thanks.

Its better than ending in a tie. Growing up watching the IHL's Salt Lake Golden Eagles, as well as playing the sport for the last 20 years, it was always very exciting watching a shootout. Give it a season.

Absolutely no to shootouts. They are an entertainment gimick for fans in weak markets.

The game ends in a tie or you play sudden death OT until someone scores.

I'm no fan of shootouts deciding games as hockey is a team sport and it individualizes it. Like having a home run derby to decide baseball games. It's exciting but it was more exciting when it was rarer.

At least they won't have it in the playoffs.

I think shootouts will be good. The only minus I see is that it will take away the excitement if it is a tie after OT too many times. But for now, I think its gonna be a great, new NHL season. Go Pens!!!

I really don't like the Shootout, when its a tie game going into the shootout you can probably tell which team will win by who has the star players. Go back to the way things were before, but with the salary cap.

Fact is its the last resort. Hockey purists have basically ran the game for the last 20 years, taking the some of the offense and enjoyment out of the game. Many great ideas during the early 90's came out to enhance people's viewing of hockey (ratings have been diving since 93'), but purist felt they didn't need things to help them see the puck go faster or where it was at all. Thats why no major networks carry NHL now, so now they've really been screwed for rating, which unlike the players understanding, is where the real money is, not attendence (which is weak as well). This idea was one of genius, now we may lose a lot of good tie games to the books but fact remains no more 1 1 or 0 0 crap that just ruins the game for an average fan. These shootouts can be great for creating the heroes and upsets that are missing from NHL.

I applaud the NHL for not only starting again but actually trying to get what's needed to be done, done so they can get those TV ratings up and possibly get into bigger markets.

Well there has to be some reasoning t that idea but problem is fans can not be expected to keep watching if it was to go to 3 or 4 OT's waiting for a winner. People don't realize this is probably the most physically demanding sport of the big 4. 2-4 minutes is it for each group of subs, so the extra OT's will add strain and take away from games later that week and at the end of the season. This is a good way to get a winner without risking to many player's health.

I am already used to the shootouts from watching the ECHL Gwinnett Gladiators, so now that they are in the show it'll be just as good.

It isn't always the star players that are good at the breakaway/shootout. Goalies probably study these guys and I'd bet some oddballs are the ones getting the shootout goals. Look at the other night. Cam Ward, a rookie goalie in Carolina stopped Mario and Sidney.

Enhance people's viewing? The Fox-puck was a stupid idea. Why didn't they invent the Fox-baseball? The answer is that a real fan deas need any cheap gimmick to follow a puck or a baseball.

TV ratings have been fine in northern markets. In southern markets, hockey will never be more than a minor slice in local markets and as such there won't be any national network coverage. In these areas hockey is well below professional & college baseball, football, basketball, golf, NASCAR and even below bowling. The reason is hockey is not a local indigenous sport in southern markets.
