Thumbs down How Democrats have "reached across the aisle"

Ted Kennedy:
On May 10th , even before essential hard facts were known about the homemade pornographic images from Abu-Ghraib, Senator Kennedy gave the world the following assessment: “On March 19, 2004, President Bush asked: ‘Who would prefer that Saddam's torture chambers still be open?’ Shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's torture chambers reopened under new management, U.S. management.”

According to Kennedy, “the President and his senior aides began the march to war in Iraq in the earliest days of the administration, long before the terrorists struck this nation on 9/11.”

Kennedy said Bush has diverted the attention of the American people with the war so he can implement "the administration's deceptions here at home."

What did Bush say about Kennedy?
"The President has a lot of respect for Senator Kennedy," says senior White House adviser Karen Hughes. "He thinks the Senator is very savvy, that he's a good legislator and that he's a person of his word."

What did his father do?
The Massachusetts Democrat has been selected to receive the 2003 George Bush Award for Excellence in Public Service on Nov. 7, directly from the hands of former President George H.W. Bush himself.

Thumbs down Nancy Pelosi

"The emperor has no clothes," Pelosi, D-California, told reporters on Thursday. "When are people going to face the reality? Pull this curtain back."

“Bush is an incompetent leader. In fact, he’s not a leader,” Pelosi said. “He’s a person who has no judgment, no experience and no knowledge of the subjects that he has to decide upon.”

“Not to get personal about it, but the president’s capacity to lead has never been there. In order to lead, you have to have judgment. In order to have judgment, you have to have knowledge and experience. He has none,” Pelosi said.

Thumbs down On Disaster Relief to Hurrican Katrina

"Absolutely no credentials," said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who also described U.S. President George W. Bush as "oblivious, in denial, dangerous."

"I would never have appointed such a person," said New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I don't think that anybody would. You would appoint somebody who has experience," said Clinton, who went so far as to call FEMA "dysfunctional."

"I don't know how they can go forward with this current leadership."

Yesterday, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada pressed for a broad investigation that would explore whether the relief response was hampered because Bush was on vacation and how much time he spent on the emerging crisis while at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Thumbs down Dean on Bush

Howard Dean has called on the Democratic Party to stand up and fight the Republicans, and yesterday (1/12/2004) he offered a firsthand demonstration.

Dean, who listened quietly, immediately replied, "George Bush is not my neighbor." When Ungerer tried to interrupt, the former governor shouted: "You sit down! You had your say, and now I'm going to have my say."

Dean went on to tell Ungerer: "George Bush has done more to harm this community right here with unfunded mandates, standing up for corporations in a takeover of farmers' land, . . . sending our kids to Iraq without telling us the truth first about why they went. Our problem is we haven't stood up to George Bush enough."

"Under the guise of supporting your neighbor, we're all expected not to criticize the president because it's unpatriotic. I think it's unpatriotic to do some of the things that this president has done to the country," Dean said to applause. "It is time not to put up any of this `love thy neighbor.' I tell you, I love my neighbor, but I want that neighbor back in Crawford, Texas, where he belongs."
