Political thought of the day.
The European Union: Is it the answer to global competition, or the beginning of the end to the great prosperity in countries like Germany of the 1960's through the 80's? The issue is still on the table but, for the most part, the European Union mainly brings several unwanted things to the table. One, it creates a loss of identity. Sovereign nations who wish to join will have to give up their currency, control over thier trade policies and submit to a central authority in Beligium. One of the side effects will be a loss of national pride and identity. Second, it creates more bureaucracy. It is already happening and many that are currently part of this great experiment complain about the burden of paper work and legaleaze, while the countries they compete with do not have that burden and can respond to markets with more agility and efficiency. Last, but never least, the burden of additional taxes and environmental laws that make companies who are part of the EU much less able to compete in global markets. In all of this, I think that countries like Germany that were once productive and had strong economies should prehaps take a long hard look at the world France and Chirac wish to create. Of course France sees themselves as the leader of the EU and there is not much room to share. Just something to ponder. Carry on! |
