I'm heading up the the Bay Area with my wife Thursday thru Saturday, and while I'm up there, I'd be interested in visiting any good model shops if anyone can recommend (kaitanium?).
I'll be staying in Burlingame, just south of SFO, so anywhere along the SF peninsula would be convenient. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide! ![]() |

there is really no perfect place for prebuilt models. you might want to contact wingsmodel to see if he still has a storefront as he would be the only person i know of that has a store that specializes in planes only up here
Wings Model other than him you got a few mediocre choices: -Theres a shop near Burlingame in San Mateo 445 South B Street called Talbots Toyland that carries models, both kits and prebuilts as well as an inventory chalk full of toys. -for model kits there is an Ace Hardware in berkeley 2145 university ave that is stocked to the brim with model kits of tanks, planes, boats, and trains as well as hobby supplies. this place is my favorite for modeling stuff since they are STOCKED but they charge nothing less than msrp which i dont like. stocked full of harder to find hasegawas in 1:200 too! -Franciscan Hobbies on 1920 ocean ave is an ok stocked hobby shop but really deals with trains. -hobby co of san francisco on 5150 geary is probably the lamest and has a good selection of modeling supplies but really specializes in doll houses.

Thanks kaitanium for all the suggestions ... I'll check with Wings Model as you have suggested.
I lived up there during the mid to late 70s and at that time, there was the San Antonio Hobby Shop in Mountain View, but they have since closed down. That was a cool place as I recall! I appreciate your help again ... I'm going to be attending the Macworld at Moscone Center Friday, and my wife will be visiting some good Filipino eateries ... hope the weather cooperates! ![]() |

Watch out for Wingsmodel. I tried ordering from him a few times online but none were successful. His comprehension of English is a major barrier and the fact that he wasn't really interested in making a sale was another set back. But as you said, you're going personally, maybe it'll be different.

as for wingsmodel yea he has a language barrier and his prices seem gouging at times but if he still has a storefront, there aint nothing like being surround by millions of planes!

In fact I had emailed Wingsmodel prior to our departure and he said he no longer has a storefront and that he sells "wholesale" only now. Precisely those words ... I think it's the language issue you both were mentioning. Got a really nice photo of a Qantas 744 on the peoplemover train from the rental car location to the terminal - will post later. BTW .. the MacBook Air is THE COOLEST LAPTOP I will ever own! Last edited by MarinerOne; 01-20-2008 at 10:31 AM. |

yep that qantas is always there. if you get lucky, you may see wunala too.
i must disagree with you on the macbook air though =). if you said "its the coolest piece of design you will ever own" then that would have been better.

For me it would be BOTH the coolest piece of design AND laptop that I will ever own. My current PowerBook G4 Titanium is getting antiquated very quickly! ![]() BTW, here's the Qantas "Longreach" ... you don't see those at Lindbergh Field that's for sure! ![]() Last edited by MarinerOne; 01-21-2008 at 12:40 AM. |
