Hey. I am also building a replica model layout of the main part of JFK..meaning the oval terminal city layout and whatever taxiways/runways happen to fit into the 16 foot by 9.5 foot layout. As I explained in a previous post, I am first using styrofoam cutouts of the actual terminals to get the overall shape and structure and I then plan to overlay that with Evergreen/Plastruct flat sheets. I already have the Delta terminals layed out including the famous oval-shaped over-hang roof and the basic shape of Terminal One layed out with a matching plane at every gate so I know how big to build the terminals and stuff. For the AA terminals, I plan to build a copy of the planned mega terminal that should be built over the next few years. As for Terminal 4, I will only have enough room to fit in about 12 of the 16 gates, unless I happen to knock out part of the garage wall..
which means i won't be able to build the full extention of Terminal 4 (the one more or less running parallel to Delt'a terminal). The British/United terminal 7 will be built next to last since there is current construction going on at JFK and I am hesitant to go plane spotting there now and run the risk of being arrested or questioned by airport security...As for Terminals 5 and 6, I am still unsure how to proceed. You guys have any ideas? Should I go ahead and build a model of the planned mega "question mark" terminal that will fit snugly around the famous TWA landmark building with the sloped roof or just build the current layout of those two terminals?Continentalboy, I hope I have given you some ideas on how to proceed. Perhaps we can share ideas and stuff. I do plan on taking pics of the current layout so that if the model should ever get screwed up, I will be able to use the pics as a layout guide...Perhaps you guys would like to see my airport construction in progress..because I am telling ya...it will be likely a year from now when you will be able to see a more or less finished product...More realistically it probably will take 1-2 yrs to build and paint, etc.... Oh yeah, I plan on building a version of the Airtrain transportation system once the terminals are in place. Brian |

I plan on building the actual terminals in the JFK layout. I suppose the airport will be 90 % realistic and 10 % fantasy. The fantasy part being either having the former TWA T5 building become a CO mini hub or incoporate United/Jetblue/America West and Continental into the mega combo-terminal 5/6. No flag pole for me but I might drap an american flag from the control tower or some other type of banner saluting the heros of Sept 11th. Hopefully, in a yr, some damn company will already have come out with a shiny new Jetblue A320 model in either 1:500 or 1:400 scale. But, I won't hold my breath. Without Jetblue models, my JFK airport will have many empty gates.

Right now, I have about 105 planes in both 1:500 and 1:400 scales. About 50 different airlines that use JFK are represented and a couple of cargo airlines as well, although I doubt I will use every single plane at once.

Well...the building are more or less based on a 1:500 scale.....most of the 1:400 planes I have are narrow-bodies so they don't throw the whole diamora off that much......

I plan on scratch-building all the terminals and parking garages, and roadways. I'm no professional by any means but that is the fun part of the construction phase. I am doing this because I get lots of joy out of the experience. Perhaps I used the wrong terminology when I talked about a mini hub. I suppose 14-18 gates for one airline is not considered a hub.....

Hey...I outlined the runways and taxiways in pencil and I plan on using paint and paint markers for the markings. I won't use their mats since it wouldn't look good with my airport diamora.....

Since I live close to JFK, I have gone numerous times to take dozens and dozens of pictures of all the terminals and pics of the new AA terminal model layout they have in their current terminal, etc....I have driven through a few times since the terrorist attacks, but I still have not had the courage to go park at one of the parking garages and look around..Don't need airport security breathing down my neck.....
As for the runways and taxiways, I am not using any mats. I am using plain ole plywood for the base....In fact, I plan on using power tools and making those roadways that dip underneath the taxiways as well.... I buy vehicles and little people in 1:500 scale from Howard models website. Although, there is a 50 $ minimum to buy products from them.....A 40 parking-lot mix of vehicles cost around $13.00 and each person cost about 9 cents. I plan on using trees and fences and parking toll-booths as well...... My airport is keptin my garage so i have room. My airport will be about 16 feet by 9.5 feet, give or take a few inches...... So, whatever room u have..just build as much as space will allow.... As for special buildings to house the GSE, no..I don't plan on any special buildings.......As for decals, I haven't figured that part out yet....right now, I'd have to say I'd go to the individual websites and print out the decals and if they are still too large, print them out and take a trip to Kinko's and see if they can reduce them in size to fit in 1:500 scale.... I'm waiting for my money replenishing time to come around. X-MAS. My airport is tight on money right now and I can barely afford my extension.
