Default Building a diorama: Day last

Dirt! Where would any self respecting JFK ramp be without it. Its what I loved most about the old JFK. Taxiways crossed over old asphalt ramps and concrete patches. Parking areas that were part asphalt and part concrete and jet exhaust covering everything. Gas spills, grease stains and tire tracks built up over the years gave the airport its true character. After painting on some white, yellow and red lines we added, you guessed it, DIRT!. Might have overdone it a little but can soften it up. The next time you see this one will be over on 1/400 highlighting my TIA collection and some other charters.

For those who want to know the average time per day I spent on this was approx 2 hrs.... one day I worked on it for 5 hrs. I used dark grey and black artist chalk on a paper towel to "dirty it up". The guard shack/blast fence hangar doors made from evergreen plastic, everthing else is cardboard. Paint used Testors Flat White,Yellow and Red.

GEEZ it looks great. As a diorama builder must say its a great effort on your part to put this together.
I would put some yellow lead in lines for the aircraft parking positions and also maybe suggest powdered grass glued to your board for even more realism. thats only my opinion but it does look fantastic and the staining effect is not overdone by any stretch, I work airside and I know what aprons affected by wear and tear look like.
Congratulations and well done

Thanks, the grass was an afterthought, picked up a cheap roll at a hobby store. I have built several dioramas like this but my primary purpose is to create a semi-realistic background to photograph my models in front of, I don't dable with landscaping very much. I spent a few years working in operations for TIA at JFK in the 1970's (yeah I know) and this was our ramp. Done mostly from memory, today the hangar is still there but sadly the paint has all peeled off and the roof patched and rusted. The ramp is now a fenced in sea of cargo containers and a new warehouse has been erected next to the security gate.
