Default Fantasy airport

I was a member of DAC years ago and had to get a new ID because I couldn't even remember my old ID & PW. I had built an 8' x 8' airport with three towers and and 4 runways. Well I needed the space so that airport got taken down. However what I did do was install a 2' wide shelf along the length of the counter I use for a desk in my office. The counter is 18' long. Someday when I retire I will convert the desk to runways and such but for now I have a fantasy shelf airport. It features a Marklin Z scale trainset, which used to go under the big airport as the subway for the airport along with working electric cable cars and an amusement park with electric moving rides as well (from Kibri etc). Total fantasy but I thought I might share it for fun. Hopefully I can upload the pics for your review. I sort of started at the one end of the shelf and shot my way down the length of the shelf.

Thanks, Leo.

Ok last pic I promise. Here is a shot of the main terminal. You can barely make out the name of the airport which is: KKI Emerald Airport. My kids names both start with K and the I is for international airport of course. Thanks, Leo.

One thing I dont' like is the Realtoy American...... Doesn't go well with all the scale models, also the train idea is cool but it would be pretty sweet to see it set up a tad bit more realisticly...... So it's basicaly just minor issues that can be fixed fairly easily. It's a great start and I do look foreward to what you do with it.

Cheers, Greg

Greg, I agree with you about the plastic american. I have always put a couple of plastic cheapies by the edge so that when small kids come over they could play with it without me having to worry about their dropping one of them that I really like. Just for grins I have rounded up some photos of my old larger airport and will post here so that you can idea of where the fantasy airport came from.

First shot you can see all three terminals and the cable cars under construction in the distance.
Second shot - the Delta and International terminals.
Third shot -close up of Delta terminal.
Fourth shot - main terminal, I built it out of wood and put the Herpa buildings around it.
Fifth shot - another main terminal view from the field.

A couple more shots from the old airport:

First couple of shots wider angle so you can see size of airport.
Then a close up of the subway going by the puddle jumpers area of the airport. Oh well, I am sure you noticed that there are some plastic ones in there as well - again only so that the little kiddies can grab and play without me having to stand over them or worry. Take care and thanks.

I used to travel allot for work and when I was sitting at the airport waiting for a flight, I would buy the plastic airplanes that were at least painted nicely. So yes the Quantus in the picture of the old airport and most of the Deltas were the plastic variety. That was because they were in reach of the kiddies. I did have a nice Delta which had the Olympic bobsledders painted on it but that was towards the back and out of reach in the Delta terminal. In the last group of photos in the 2nd shot you can see it turning onto the runway as it prepares for takeoff.

Glad you all thought it was cool. I did too. I was going to build amusement parks, electric car racing tracks and of course mountains with cable cars on them on the surrounding tables. If you look close you can see that I pasted large diorama backgrounds on all the walls. It was a continuous scene meant to make all the dioramas look real from a certain perspective. Since I had to take mine down maybe one of you can someday build a room filled with nothing but this kind of cool stuff? That's why I check back here at DAC to check out all of your very cool layouts and designs.

Take care and thanks.
Leo.

I will look and see what other pics I have but I think these are the best. As you can tell I used a pretty lousy camera so all the pics quality is pretty poor. Also you can buy just white airplanes without any decorations on them in order to custom design your own. You can see in one of the photos of the main terminal a custom Microsoft airplane which I bought. The guy who made it bought a real lead one which had been painted gloss white and then painted it to make the custom one he sold me. I would guess that you might try googling it to see if you can find someone to sell you just the plain white ones that you can customize yourself.

I dug out one of my all white planes and then Googled it in case you have not heard of the "all white series" from Dragon Wings. I bought a few of their 767-300s in all white. I found some additional info on the all white series from Dragon Wings on another forum. Here is what they had, I post as an aid to make your Google searches easier in case you want to buy some and make your own cool custom designs.

Dragon Wings All White Series
57001 ???
57002 All White Airbus A320
57003 All White 747-400
57004 All White Airbus A319
57005 ???
57006 All White 767-300
55269b All White MD-11 World Airways (Special Version) = All white

By now they might have made even more models, who knows.

Take care, Leo.

My model airplanes are 1:400 scale. To build the main terminal I cut up strips of hobby wood available at most hobby stores. Each piece of wood was something like 1/4" thick or so and 3" wide and several feet long. Then I cut smaller pieces of wood and put them in between each long strip in order to achieve that kind of banding effect which most airports have. Because the pieces of wood in between the big strips of wood were so small you couldn't see them but they were big enough to hold the bigger strips together. Then I glued and painted the constructed main terminal building. Surrounding the terminal are the standard Herpa buildings.

Take care, Leo.
