i am thinking of starting my very first airport, i would like to make an international one like MEL or my fav. airport DXB... i was wondering how much would the WHOLE thing cost(i want to do it in 1/400 scale) and i would have a large number of a/c if doing DXB(im a huge EK fan...) please give me the price in either USD, EUR, GBP or AUD thanks, ![]() |

Well, the cost really depends on what you plan on building the airport with, how you plan on building it, and how large you plan on making it. Here's what I would think:
TERMINAL: Balsa Wood: personally, I find it hard to work with and almost impossible to use in a detailed airport. (probably about $30 USD for an entire terminal) Poster Board with Foam Core Base: this is my favorite building method; although it does not make very detailed terminals, it is easy to work with and looks similar to computer generated architectural models (about $20 USD for an entire terminal) Herpa Terminals:good looking, but pretty standard for airports (about $200 for an entire airport) Ground Foil/Base Spray Painted Masonite: my personal favorite as it is good looking, although it takes a while to build (about $30 for a large airport) Herpa Ground Foils:nice looking, but you can't "personalize" your airport Print-out Foils: nice looking; if you make your own, it is time consuming, but it is "personalized", if you use one made by someone else (there are a few here on DA.C that you can download) it is as simple as clicking print ($20 if you home print (as in using photo paper in a nomal color printer), $40 if you have it printed at a printing business) Accessories: Herpa Jetways: good all around, might need modifications for highly detailed airports (about $2.50 a piece for a single jetway, slightly more for a double jetway) Herpa Accessories: rediculously expensive, but, at least for me, they seem unavoidable (about $15-$20 USD per set) Homemade Accesories: I don't really know much about this, but it can be done Overall, for an airport at the size of DXB or MEL, I would say at least $300 for terminals, accessories, and the foil. It would cost more if you used Herpa terminals. Again, all of the prices are in USD. willio |

In case you don't already have the planes for the airport, that would cost a ton in 1:400 scale-probably between $300 and $400 for 10 Etihad planes.

well, i wouldnt get a lot of Etihad jets, but i would get a big number of Emirates jets...maybe i wont make an airport based on a real one, i think it would be better just to use my imagination, and make my own one the only problem is...where?(which city?)thanks ![]() |

To add to it, if you want a complete airport, it will require a large amount of space. If you want something like the real thing, it will be about eight meters. Though if you keep it simple with using things around the house, I think it shouldn't cost more than 200 USD. Keeping it homemade keeps the price down very well, and with the right work, will look much better than Commercial products.
Though if you buy all the commercial products, like herpa buildings (should be around 140 total if you buy enough for a whole airport), Jetways (herpa's are popular, should cost about 60 USD total for a 15 gate terminal), if you choose to use commercial foils, most of them will range for 60 USD to 150 USD.

Yeah... sorry, that price was in fact for Emirates, not Etihad like I said.
And of course, like Bill-ay said, don't forget to have fun building your airport! willio |

Its actually an awesome name, and you should use it.
Ive got a potential terminal from a Ferrero Chocolates box and i am making a hangar from a half moon shaped chocolate box too. Im using deo can lids for the fuel farm and a selection of found objects and card models for other buildings. Its going to be a 50s-70s diorama so no need for jetways. U can do anything your imagination wishes in 1/400 scale. I look forward to deing inspired by your work.
