My 1:1000 Airport

Hello my friends at DAC,

Here are some pictures from my new airport project in scale 1:1000. So far I have been working on the surrounding landscape, taxiway signs and the terminal building.

The terminal is not fixed yet, because I will put lighs into the buildings later on. I also plan to install fiber optics in the runway and taxiways. Just now I’m drilling holes in the runway for that.

This airport measures 875 x 1380 mm. My other one measures 1000 x 2000 mm.

I took a picture, just to show how small these airplanes actually are. 1:500 scale Boeing 747 vs 1:1000 scale Boeing 747.

This scale is small, but that is just what makes them so great. You can easily build an entire airport on a pretty small area. The mould and printing is still pretty good for this size of models.

I use my 1:500 models to show off the aircrafts. The 1:1000 is more for showing an airport diorama.

The 777-200 Austrian Airlines is made by Herpa. I got mine from Aviation Center in Berlin.

The grass is made of fiber. I mixed a number of different colours to get the right look. I also added some decoration sand to get the effekt of summergrass. The ground foil is made by Herpa.

I was trying to look for models of 1:1000 airports as I had recently found another maker of 1:1000 airplanes with better wheels than Herpa. It seems yours was the only I could find on both Wings900 and DAC.....nice work. Any idea if any other 1:1000 airports around ?

I've felt grass like this before. I've played on this stuff. In fact, this hybrid grass is registered Carl Spackler's Bent. It's a cross between Kentucky bluegrass, featherbed bent and northern California sinsemilla. The amazing stuff about this is that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt.

I see a control towel in his version. Did the set come with the control towel ? The description provided by Herpa of the 1:1000 airport set is quite vague.
