Default Japanese Pavilion Display, Expo 86

In 1986, the city of Vancouver BC hosted a world's fair called Expo 86. I shall never forget the long lines to enter the attractions. There was a DC-3 fly-by but of course I missed it. What I did see was this wonderful display at the Japanese Pavilion, which you see below in a somewhat over-exposed, old photo.

This elaborate and well-detailed airport featured 1:144 or 1:200 airliners that took off and landed. They were suspended on wires and ran from an automated overhead rail that somewhat resembled the rack at a tailor shop or laundry.

I wish that I could show you a better photo, but I was pleased to snap at least this one of this impressive model airport.

Actually...I remember dropping my sister off to fly Pan Am back from Hamburg, Germany to the U.S, in 1990....and my parents and I visiting the observation deck after she went through security. Hamburg Fuhlsbuttel had something similar in a room on the observation deck...maybe still does. Anybody know?

The only things that I remember about the Japan Pavillion was the HST train you got to ride on, the robot that stamped your passport and the cool train setup that went through their miniature city. I did manage to de-rail the train as it went into a mountain pass, that was fun!

Didn't they have a worlds fair in Japan last year? Or at least something that was very similar to one? Anyways, that pic can use the CP Air "Expo 86'" 747, now that would be something.

Yes, it still is there... I have been there in August 2005. It is still working, and they will give a show every 3 hours. It costs around 2 euros to see it working. But they have several scales and sizes, it's not the most realistic diorama
