Smile Hola! My 1/72 Collection begins today...

hi to all people here!

first... i am from Spain and my english is veeeeery poor (i usualy need help from google translator )... so excuse me if i write bad or with no correct words.

today I just received my 5 first diecast models!
2 Century Wings, 2 Hobby Master and 1 Corgi.... all modern jets aircraft.

I am very happy and very impressed with the quality of these figures! I have not idea of how great the diecast figures are ! I've never had in my hand a figure of diecast.
before I buy them, I first checked forums like this.

buuuut... i have had some problems trying to fit almost all parts in my aircrafts. I didn't know they were so difficult to assemble.
its very difficult for me to keep the pieces in place. some pieces fall easily.
even, i broke a couple of small pieces.
diecast = look and don't touch!

uhmm....
What I am doing wrong?? no instructions in the boxes.
Do I must to use some kind of glue or something for keep some parts in place??

please help!

pd: when I get mount the aircrafts, i will post some pics here.

Usually for pieces, it's a good idea to have BOTH elmer's white glue and some sort of lubrication (like pledge wax).

Before I put in a piece into my models, I'll test it first. If it's a tight fit, I'll use a q-tip and put some wax on it to let it go in easier. If it's a loose fit, I use white glue.

thanks friends! (in spain there isn't a forum about diecast like this)

SuperKungFu... then, do you use a little of glue when pieces doesn't fit well?
what exactly kind of glue? could you show me it with a pic?

then, in all my models almost all (or many) pieces need glue.
in the Corgi model, there are a couple of pieces that need a "super" glue becouse in other case, they fall for sure.
(tomorrow, I will show pics about this)

and the problem is... if i put glue, what happen if i want change the airplane config (armament, with or without landing gear,...)??

I use a little bit of glue called Elmer's white glue

Basically it's like school glue so it's not permanent and it won't cause any damage. It's strong enough to hold the object in place but if you don't want it, a simple tug and the glue turns into flakes so it leaves behind no residue. That way you will still be able to change landing gear/missiles...etc.

Welcome to the forum,Dani72! Hope that you will enjoy your time here, and also could learn some tips on diecast model as well.

Looks like you're having the same problem with me as well (with my HM MiG-21 model); but thanks to a tip by SuperKungFu,my problem is now solved!

some pics of my 5 first diecast models:
(sorry about the quality... my camera is no good and with flash, worse)

MIG-21 PFM - Fisbed F
927th 'LAM SON', VPAF, VIETNAM - 1972
(CORGI)

this piece needs a 'powered' superglue. but i only apply it in the union with the landing gear (red circle), so i can remove that part easilly if i want:

McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom
VMFA-333, Shamrock 201, 1972
(HOBBY MASTER)

F-8E CRUSADER
U.S. Marine Corps VMF(AW)-333 Fighting Shamrocks DN7 1967
(CENTURY WINGS)

with clovers like the F-4.

F-14A TOMCAT
U.S. Navy VF-154 Black Knights NF100 2003
(CENTURY WINGS)

I don't know if the armament is in correct position... i was not sure how must i mount it:

XF-2A
TRDI & A.D.T.W. "63-8501" 1997
(HOBBY MASTER)

this XF-2A is a very nice model.
but it's very 'fragile and delicate'... needs to glue on almost every piece.
also I had to change the pilot and take one of the other model... there was no way to insert the pilot in the cockpit. :-(

***

and here the 'family' together:

this family will grow soon with three new additions that i ordered days ago. i am waiting for them.
;-)

Nice pics.

I believe with the F-14 ordnance, only one LGB is mounted on the front. Can't be sure about Phoenix on glove pylon either.

If David is reading this thread, I'm sure he'll confirm the correct arrangement. He's quite an expert on this kind of stuff

thanks guys, but the pics are bad, sorry. without good light is impossible to make better photos with my crappy camera.

CarbonPlane... i tried several possibilities and combinations with the armament. but as my knowloedge is poor, I checked this pic of my model on CW website and i tried copy the same arrangement, but it can not see it well:

What a fantastic start you made with your collection Dani

I like the Shamrocks gathering of F-4 and F-8. Never thought about the Crusader but it does look like a good model to get. That's the trouble with this hobby, it's too addictive

A posting has already been made about the armament on the Tomcat. I don't seem able to post a link but I've copied and pasted the information here:

The F-14 can certainly carry 2 GBU-24's--just not up front, side-by-side like most models show. Their fins will clip each other when dropped. They have to be carried diagonally on the real thing--one up front on the left, one in the rear on the right. (they won't fit directly front/back either, they're too long)

It has nothing to do with weight/lift/power, and everything to do with putting large finned bombs on closely-spaced weapons stations originally designed for missiles. If they fit, the F-14 could certainly carry 4 GBU-24's, as it can carry 4 Mk84's, which are the same weight.

but as you can see in the A-7E pic, they forgot finish the piece that cover the front gear .
this piece in the A-6A is ok, but there is nothing painted in the A-7E .

do you know if this piece is in that way for all A-7 models? is it correct or a fault?

Well ... you have been warned

As i can see, your collection starts growing like most of ours at the beginning: a little bit chaotic with jumping back and forth between WW2 and modern fighters

But thats OK ... so many good stuff out there that screams "BUY ME"!

yeah ... it remembers me the film 'The Final Countdown' (1980) (with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen) that I just saw the other day... F-14 vs Zero.

but at this moment, i can't do any other thing. when i get more WW2 aircrafts, i will take some books from the other shelf and I will separate the models.

sorry, but i prefer buy here in Spain. i don't want pay an extra for shipping to my country, and the customs fees at arrival...
for exemple, here is a good site: Vehículos y figuras militares en miniatura - DIECAST.ES

buy in US or Canada is expensive for me...
i bought my Corgi B-17 in US. cost $125 + $45 for shipping. and when it arrived, I had pay 50€ ($70) for customs tariffs.
so, no more in US. ony Spain or EU.

Very good. It sounds like you're into jets from the Cold War era. Sabre, Shooting Star, Delta Dagger and so on. Not many Soviet models around - MiG-17 and MiG-19 to name two. Su-7 and Su-15 would be nice if they were made as well.

Enjoy the hobby

Good choice pucara The Lightning really is an iconic RAF interceptor. One of your choices must be 74 Sqn over at Tengah, Singapore. The other one is 5 Sqn from Binbrook? These are the only two I found to be readily available. There are others but they are either harder to find or command very high prices.

The quality is likely to be the same for both and it's down to a question of which livery you prefer.

Pucara, you should buy the Hobby Master, Argentinien A-4 Falklands war, it is a very good looking airplane. I have that one, plus two Harriers from the same conflict (I made them chase each other like in a dogfight

Regards from another latinoamerican (Peru)

I really like your thread, great pics. It tells a great story of your progress. You have great selections! Unless you are strictly a military collector, beware the 1/200 airliners! Another addictive category of diecast collecting! Hope you will post future additions to you collection.

I am sure you will be adding the Spanish Harriers very soon.

There's another PUCARA on the DHP forum who says he has the Spanish Harrier and it is very nice It's posted under the HM section.

Don't know if it's the same person , profile photos are very similar, location is different. The other PUCARA is from Virginia, USA.
