Default Cherry Blossoms and Top Gun Store in Tokyo

Was in Tokyo recently with the Mrs for the cherry blossoms. The spring weather was good and there are still lots of cherry blooms to see in Ueno and Kamakura.

The highlight of the trip was supposed to attend the Fuji Shibazakura Festival on Saturday (April 15) - the first day of the festival. There were supposed to be 800,000 stalks of pink moss flowers carpeting the shore of Lake Motosuko.

It was a big disappointment to learn that the shibazakura are not in bloom yet when we reached Kawaguchiko.

Anyway the big disappointment was made up the next day when I managed to pickup some bargains at the Top Gun store in Akihabara.

The Sunday was bright and sunny. Akihabara streets were filled with thousands of people, mainly tourist who goes there to shop for electronic products and games.

Top Gun is located in the corner of of one of busy closed streets. Located on the fifth floor, it sells a mix of apple computer and accessories, wrestling memorabilias, and die cast aeroplanes.

Amongst the die cast brands are: Hobby Master, Corgi, Aviation 72, Air Force 1, Oxford, IXO, Herpa and a few Japanese brands. Of course, here you will find a wide range of Japanese planes.

The prices here are much much higher than what I would pay for in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. However the older models are quite reasonable.

The bargains are in the form of ex-displayed / slight imperfect/ missing parts models.

I managed to pickup the following
HA1060 Lockheed TF-104 (3,600 JPY) - (old models)
HA3537 F/A 18A (5,700 JPY) - (ex -display)
HA2912 Douglas A-1 Skyraider (5,700 JPY) (ex-display)
Oxford DH103 Hornet F3 (4,100 JPY) (vertical fin slightly loose).

Although my Mrs have urged me to pickup a few more bargains, I decided not to for the lack of space.

There are about six 1/72 scale helicopters in Japanese colours by IXO, selling at 5,000 JPY each.

For the Canadian members who are looking for HA1060 TF-104, there are still five boxes left, going for 3,600 JPY and two boxes of HA4309 Canadair F6 Sabre (7,400 JPY).

Congrats on your finds!

I received my HA2912 Spad last week, and am very happy with it indeed!

I would love to visit Japan in general too, as a big fan of their whisky, food and history

How come there are so many RCAF models there, do you know? (I get why so many are left, just not why the shops stocked them in the first place?? )

perhaps hobbymaster requires a certain number of models to be taken by the distributor?

Maybe I am biased and are more focus on RCAF planes as in a few of the threads, the Canadian forum members are seeking out these models.

You see only what you want to see.

Just like the three monkeys from the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō.

¥3,600 for the tf104 is a very good price, actually. ¥7400 for the sabres... the canadian members could probably get them in canada for that price still. just a guess, though...

¥7400 = RM296. Currently, the HA4311 Pakistani F-86 is sold at RM290.

BTW, goods sold in Japan is subjected to a 8% goods and services tax. But if you are a tourist like me, purchase of ¥5000 and above are tax free.

I was not interested in getting an F-14 so I did not pay any attention to the Century Wings products.

You see only what you want to see.

BTW, all this is academic because in their website it is stated "We are not able to accept any overseas mail order or provide any overseas shipment service."

So cheap or not you need a friend in Tokyo to buy for you. And unless the person is a foreign national the goods is subjected to 8% GST.

I would love to know more about the two Zeros in the first picture. Diecast, maker, etc? It looks like they are in 1:72 scale.

Yes it is Zero Fighter Type 52 Mitsubishi A6M5C in 1/72 scale.

If I am not mistaken is made by DOYUSHA (Dormy company).

I saw three different boxes (marked 1,2 & 3 on the box). But I think there are 4 in the set.

1) Empire Navy No. 203 Naval Squadron
2) Empire Navy No. 203 Naval Squadron Takeo Tanimizu Superior Flight Sergeant Machine
3) Empire Navy No. 721 Naval Squadron (Sacred Squadron)

I believed they are made of plastic.

They are priced at ¥2,700.

Thanks for the additional information. I searched on Google and found all four. I have all five of the Easy Model Zeros released before they 'merged' with Doyusha. The first two from the new Doyusha series are the same as EasyModels (http://www.easymodel.net/index.php/I.../isView/1/p/4/). However, No.3 and No. 4 are totally new schemes! I managed to locate a seller in Japan who has them in stock so I'm really pleased you posted the pictures or I would never have known about them. Here's the link to this series on Doyusha's web site: http://www.doyusha-model.com/list/figure/72_zero.html.

Tomcatter, I personally like the Easy Model / Doyusha Zeros. They are nicely detailed and offer unique schemes (including an all silver captured one in US markings). They are wheels down only but mix in nicely with my Witty Wings Zeros. I'm looking forward on getting the latest ones.

Sometimes Easy Model is the only option, especially if you want exotic models like this MiG-15UTI from Cambodia.

Hobby Master is not producing the 2 seaters. And if I were to built one, I probably get smutched marks all over.

not into mig15s but that's a pretty fine model you have there!
