Default True-blue, dink-di(cast): the show us your RAAF models thread

After unboxing my brace of RAAF F-4Es for the Spook thread, I figured it would be neat to have an RAAF thread and I'd share them in here

Most of my RAAF models are boxed, so until I get the cab (Detolf) and have modded it I shall do temp unboxings.

In the meantime, anyone and everyone else with RAAF models, please share!

More to come tonight/tomorrow

Also, Bugs & Superbug (more of these soon, thanks to HM ):

This is a pic I have posted previously, so I will snap some fresh ones tonight (as I still have these temporarily unboxed anyway..)

Thanks for posting this. I will freely admit I didn't know the RAAF operated Phantoms before the 111's.

Yeah, they were a bridging capability (pretty much analogous in many respects to how we ended up with the Superbugs..) until the Pigs (F-111 in RAAF parlance) were ready, and only operated for a couple of years in the early '70s.

However, when the time came, the crews from Nos 1 & 6 Sqns which operated them didn't want to give them up!

We never used them operationally (though RAAF exchange pilots did fly combat over 'Nam in USAF Spooks), and interestingly (and a bit stupidly TBH) they were never employed in an A2A role in RAAF service, as Nos 1 & 6 Sqns were designated strike squadrons, not fighter squadrons..

Here's a picture of the first RAAF RF-4C pilot to complete 100 missions over North Vietnam (quite an achievement!) while on exchange with the USAF:

And here are some stories of the RAAF crew/ground crew members who went on exchange with the USAF to learn to become Phantom Phlyers/Phixers:

Aussie Pilots flying Phantoms over South Vietnam

F-4E RAAF Phantom Phylers #1

F-4E RAAF Phantom Phylers #2

The situation really is very close to how the RAAF acquired F/A-18Fs to replace the F-111s, down to how the crews found they loved their "temporary" mounts..

This time round though we have learned the lessons taught by the Spook, and the RAAF is not only keeping it's Superbugs, but also acquiring EA-18G Growlers - and using the Superbugs to their full, multi-role potential

Nice bunch of RAAF models you got there, those RAAF spooks are impossible to find at a reasonable price now.

This is my modest start to my RAAF theme, can't wait to get a few bugs as well, your group look awesome.

Dude, nice models

I have the Herky-bird and the Huey, and both are great little models (very little in these instances ) - I also have the IF200 No 37 Sqn C-130E and the other No 9 Sqn Long Tan UH-1B, plus the white roofed version..

I have the other, darker, Hawk Mk.127 as I believe that is an RAAF Pearce (WA) bird, but is a bit different and a plane I have seen display both in Australia and in NZ at air shows (Avalon and Warbirds Over Wanaka..); I do like the standard scheme you have though

If it wasn't Falcon I would definitely have picked it up already, and might still, but FM is such a crap-shoot with QC, and they aren't exactly starting form an Air Commander level of detail/quality anyway so a poor QC copy of an Falcon Models release is a pretty piss-poor model

That Pig is my favourite one, but I don't have it! I am sooo tempted to start seriously searching for it now though, especially having figured out my cabinet config and knowing I shan't have the space constraint that has restrained me from buying too many F-111s thus far (they are beautiful, but big and I already had the USAF SEA camo one so went for a dark grey initially)

I will post my RAAF Pig soon, maybe next (after the Bug reshoot) - it's the Farewell Flight release, which has a nice splash of colour on its tail

Of course, the other nice RAAF camo Pig is this one, from No 1 Sqn:

If I do start searching for an RAAF camo Pig I shall have to choose between you No 6 Sqn release and the one above..

Though, given I am going to have a modded Detolf for RAAF (and regional Commonwealth neighbours/partners - RSAF, RMAF..) perhaps I could look for both? A Nos 1 & 6 Sqns pair would echo the brace of Spooks I kicked the thread off with nicely after all

Thanks, yeah that 1st Sqn was my first pick but very hard to find, I might get a grey farewell pig down the track.

A CAC Sabre would be nice and a P-40N and if HM do a 1/72 P-51, a camo version with southern cross tail

A CAC Sabre is very high up on my personal wishlist!

There is the Oxford No 3 Sqn P-51D with the Southern Cross tail, which I have considered, but yeah - I would prefer an HM should one become available..

One of those P-40Ns (Kittyhawk Mk IV in RAAF terms..) with the white tail on the all-over jungle green (as you posted yesterday I believe) will, I am quite sure, be along presently - that's a definite buy for me.

I have the "Green Ghost" Beaufighter in that livery among my WWII RAAF collection (I will get to posting the Beaus ) and can't wait to have the Kittyhawk to display next to it!

Pearce is the busiest RAAF base in Australia.

79 SQN's Hawks were painted in the dark grey scheme to make the aircraft easier to see.

If I didn't have all my models in storage back in Australia I'd chuck up a picture or two. CAC Sabre would be a definite buy for me as well but the one model I am hanging out for is a RAN S-2 Tracker!

Yeah right, that's interesting - I didn't actually know that was the case!

Glad I made the right pic for a West Aussie

Really nice collection Grabs - there's a few in there I have, but a few I'm missing. Impressively complete mate!

One big gap in my (physically and metaphorically) is a Lanc - that is another model I am going to start seriously looking for soon (according to my diecast master plan )..

Man, me too - I didn't start out trying to go a complete RAAF theme, so have a few gaps..

Now I know what space I have and have settled on my themes I am trying to catch up though!

Luckily there are regular Aussie releases though, because this stuff is damn hard to find on the secondary market - people simply don't sell it on very often at all.

Seeing this has made my mind up to sell off most of the CW Tomcats I have while they have the value to make it worth doing, and buy, buy, buy missing RAAF bits and pieces with the proceeds

I don't have many models but here is what I got for now. really want to grab the HM Op OKRA jet when it comes out. The C-17 and C-130 are 1/400 and the Super Hornets are 1/72.

Nice collection of RAAF birds Jason92 - I have the upcoming Gemini 1/200 C-17 (213) on pre-order and can't wait to get it!

I'm looking forward to both the Op Falconer ('03 Iraq) Bug and Op Okra (anti-ISIS Iraq/Syria) Superbug too, I'm expecting both to be very nice based on their predecessors in the release schedule.

I like the camo C-130 too mate, that's another one I haven't got..

Good pics too, love the patches and etc!

Thanks mate. Yeah I collect a lot of things related to military aviation I also have an Op OKRA shoulder patch for 1 squadron as seen in this pic from the ADF.

Here is mine. Which will be displayed with the model.

That's going to look sweet mate.

I have a bunch of patches and so on to go with my Vietnam collection that I picked up over there in the HCMC "Military Market", plus some stuff like a Vietnam-era USMC M1 helmet (with the correct Mitchell-pattern cover), a Viet Cong D445 Btn flag (with Long Tan battle honours) and a WWII German stahlhelm - militaria is always of interest, and definitely makes for some cool displays.

There have been some great examples posted in this forum of peoples' set ups like that posted in this forum over the years (eg Tripoli's awesome NASA display; the displays with prints in the background, tbbklb4's sweet dios are all recent examples..) - I can see from your pictures' backgrounds you have that kind of thing going on too

Definitely something I am shooting for in my hobby/collection room, once I have all the cabs set up. I'm going to have to take it one step at a time though, and I want to prioritise A) more cabs to get my models out of their boxes & B) a workspace for building and painting kits/bits and pieces first.. Rome wasn't built in a day and so on, you know?

When I have got my RAAF cab set up though I will be looking out for some of these patches for sure - the local RAAF Museum has a bunch, so I will probably head on down there

I have a classic hornet in storage Just waiting for the Falconer bug to be out and I'll have that and the 30th bug on order.

I really like the operational history of the RAAF bugs, even the Williamstown bug has some war on terror (?) combat history.

Cheers, I've managed to grab every Aussie 1/72 released so far bar one of the Corgi P-40s and one of the Witty RAN Sea Furies. I'm yet to buy the latest HM RAAF Hornet as I'm trying to track one down here in Canada with little luck so far. All up, I have 52 RAAF and RAN models so will be looking at building a custom glass cabinet along a wall when I move back to Oz.

WWII definitely qualifies, and Epap they are lovely

Which, may I ask, of course the 72 fighters are releases and which are Code 3s?

I was going to move on to my WWIIs, but you seem to have scooped the pool!! There is nothing I have from that era from then someone else (mainly you!) hasn't already posted now

Great pics, great models!!

Thanks, TK. Re the 1:72nd scale fighters, the Boomerang is, of course, a kit-make and right above it, the Spitfire, is a code 3. The others are as is---with some minor staining added.

You've done rather well so far Garbs but you've got a few more to go. As far as 1/72 diecast RAAF and RAN models go there have been 62 that I've nabbed over the years not including a couple of plastic Easy Models ones.

There's 62???? Have you got a link for the thread? I don't collect EM or the cheaper side of Oxford, but I thought I had everything else covered. Managed to track down HA3534, and reserved the two other Hornets coming.

There's a few other Spits and P-40's from Corgi, Boston from HM and a spit from Dragon.

Not including 1/48s but Franklin Mint made quiet a few RAAF models and HM a few.

A CAC Sabre would be nice and a P-40N and if HM do a 1/72 P-51, a camo version with southern cross tail
3 SQN you mean????

Oxford have released it. Its the cheapy tooling with fixed landing gear but not to bad.

Dragon released a NMF version of a 3 SQN P51D, with the Southern Cross tail, now quite hard to get and Dragon make the best 1:72 Mustang ever, including Corgi's, in some respects, disappointing effort.

Franklin Mint also released one in 1:48.

Unfortunately HM made a mess of the Cardwell MK VIII Spit and got the Green way wrong. It should be the same green as the Gibbes MK VIII Spit.

I watched that F111 and two of its stable mates in the last public display of the type in the RAAF.

RAAF Williamtown open day. I thinks its a piss poor scheme that the RAAF decided to utilise, but I too have this model.

It was a great show, with an aircraft that had real Strategic effects,....not like a Submarine, but in the S.E Asian and Pacific region it had a real deterrence factor.

And the F111 demo was very speccy indeed:

It was a model, that I have to have,...even though the RAAF did such a poor effort with the scheme.

Awesome picture!

Yeah, I agree more could have been done with the scheme - the model is very nicely executed OTOH IMO.

Yeah I'm aware of those, wouldn't mind the Dragon but it's rare AF now, happy to wait and see if HM do a P-51 in 1/72.
