Default What's your personal favourite/holy grail diecast model?

Hi All,

Just thought I would start a new conversation topic and ask all of you, what is your favourite/holy grail model? Do you have a rare piece that is your holy grail? Do you have a common model that is your personal favourite?

My personal favourite and/or holy grail is a tie of two models. The first being the CW 1/72 JR AJ210 that I purchased years ago for AU$90 and seeing what people are selling them for I should I bought more of them!

My other holy grail would be the Hobby Master HA3803 Polish F-16. I spend months looking for one and I found it, I got it and I just loved everything about it. I had it on display as my pride and joy and a friend got a bit hands on with it and broke the pitot tube. The nose has been replaced and it looks brand new now but when it happened I was livid as you can imagine.

Keen to hear what you all have as your favourites.

Cheers guys,
Steven.

I'd have to go with the Corgi English Electric Lightning T.5 XS452:

I love the 2-seater Lightning, but only a couple of special limited edition code-3s have ever been released.

I've been lucky enough to get many of mine over the past years, but one I am still waiting on is the Vietnam War-era air commando squadron Invader variant, the A-26K Counter Invader.

I have many models to choose from but I would say my favorite models are the HM French Air Force Mirage 2000 HA1601 & HA1602 and the HM Iraqi MiG-21 coming in third place...

These three models I'm very happy & fortunate to have in my collection!!

There's quite a few:

Corgi Lancaster "Phantom of the Ruhr", B17 "Ye Olde Pub", Fairey Swordfish "Sinking of the Bismark", Sea King "Apollo 11 recovery", Leuchars BAC Lightning & Sharkey Ward Sea Harrier.

Dragon P51 Mustang "Glamorous Glennis" & "Big Beautiful Doll"

HM Mirage 2000 "Operation Daguet", Syrian Mig 21.

All of these were really hard to find for reasonable money.

But my fave is still Century Wings Blackbird 17976, great early scheme and history, bought it at just the right time.

Wow, very tough to narrow down. I have many favorites, but one of my very first models was the HM f-4 Showtime 100 and it is still at the top of my list. After that I think it would be the Corgi PBY Black Cat and the B-17 Hell's Angels.

Favourites I've got would be the AC1005 'Supersonic Gun Kill' F4E and Corgi's B17G 'Bit o' Lace'.

The long term targets I'd love to pick up would be Corgi's 'Condor Legion' (Winter) He 111 and B17G 'Nine o' Nine'.

The He 111 in particular would nicely round off my 'Eastern Front' He 111s having already got the 'Summer' and 'Finnish' schemes

Century Wings Libyan Raider SR-71 signature edition.

A close second is is HM's F-16 with a code 3 done to make it the 180th FW.

Basically, any of the Corgi Ju-52 releases. I think Corgi perfectly captured the plane in 1:72 scale and they all display very well.

I have all except the float version and I'm not sure if I could pick a favorite.

For me it would have to be HA3530 CF-18B #188920. A model that actually appears in my Pilot logbook.

I flew this particular aircraft from the back seat during my KC-130 Aircraft Commander's course when I served in the RCAF.

Now it makes sense why you have such passion & admiration for the Canadian Air Force, I didn't know you served with the RAAF at one point in your carrier, I'm sure you have a nice story or stories to tell your grand kids one day!!

ooooft, tough one this. not sure if I have an 'holy grail' model, but my favourite would probably be the corgi 1/72 Vulcan! but as its not 'technically' ALL diecast then its probably the CORGI RAF COASTAL COMMAND B-17!! SIMPLY AWESOME!!!

My Carousel 1 Von Werra Bf-109 I snagged off eBay last year. Got it for a very reasonable price, and it's still the best 1/48 diecast 109 since the HM versions have canopy and landing gear issues.

Greetings, my holy grail plane is the Orange Lion RNLAF F-16 pictured below. IMO I luv the color scheme and it would be a highlight to the demonstration teams planes I'm presently gathering.

My other holy grail plane has not been produced yet, and may never....except for by the long out of biz MFG Falcon Models which might have if it were still in biz, and that is my long dream of the 1/72 diecast Blue Angels F9F Cougar.

Not a missile.

ACMI (Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation) pod. Used to record and playback the positions of the aircraft during air combat training.

Seen also on F-16s. This was the first time an ACMI pod was used on Hobby Master's F/A-18.

Wow thanks everyone for your replies and photos!

I have been a member for less than a year, long time lurker first time poster and thought I would be a bit more active here.

I do have a question though, I have noticed several members mention 'Code 3' and I am not sure what that is. It sounds like some sort of modification to a model so if anybody can let me know that would be appreciated.

A little bit about me - I have about 50-60 models now which are mainly HM but a few CW and an AF1 Splintered Flanker with several reoccuring themes around particular air forces (Polish and Australian) as well as favourite squadrons (I am another JR Tomcat fan). I have just moved house and I have a display cabinet which I want to fill up with these themes and when that happens I would like to post a few photos up and share it here with you guys - might be a month or two away though but hopefully sooner rather than later!

Again thanks for the replies and photos - I am really enjoying these sorts of threads and love seeing people's collections and photos. I just started this hobby a bit more seriously just under a year ago and I think I am pretty lucky with some of the pieces I have which is why I came up with the idea of this thread.

Thanks everyone!
Steven.

Code3 means loosely a total repaint or changing the markings to have a completely different model.

My White F-4E started off as Arkansas Traveler from HM.

Oooh, that's a pricey model to sacrifice (though the results certainly justify doing so) - could you not have picked a less highly sought F-4E, or did you do the Code 3 when Arkansas Traveller was still a new releases, before it's secondary market value became so silly?

No, the Edwards AFB F-4E I posted was done by a professional.

I have done a few of my own. But there was no way I could pull off that white and orange livery.

Very cool thread Stefciu... My Holy Grail Diecast Model right now is one I don't even have. As a matter of fact I only saw a picture of it last week but I'm totally blown away with how much I love it... It's 1:48, a scale I swore I'd never get into, and it's produced by Hobby Master... Ok, Ok, it's the F3F "Flying Barrel" and I can't wait to get my hands on one...

Thanks Spooky!

1:48 scale is great for props I reckon though! I have several different HM WW2 planes and they look fantastic (my favourite being the HM HA8303 Grey Nurse) so good luck in finding the F3F - I hope you get it!

Normally I'm not into these kind of circus schemes, but because it is a Dutch livery I would like to have one. Made by HM though, as Gemini used an F-16C and it should be an A-model.

Great thread topic Steven. It's hard to pick just one. One of my personal favorites that was hard to come by was the Black Bunny Tomcat from CW (Decked out in all black ready for a night on the town... haha).

This one rarely came up for sale and once I mentioned that I was looking for one a forum member here decided to part with his copy to help complete my set.

Now if I can only locate the black nosed flap down F-8 from CW....

RR....perhaps you know something the present Demo team doesn't know......I have taken the liberty to pose the question about the version of F-16 used for the Orange Lion.....Apparently both Gemini and you maaaaaaay be wrong.....it looks to have been a F-16B!

Greetings,

A question about the 2007 - 2009 F-16 Orange Lion.

What was the exact version of F-16 used during the operation of the Orange Lion.....was it a F-16 A or B or C or D?

Thank You!

Now if I can only locate the black nosed flap down F-8 from CW....

PM sent mate

I just purchased my 200th model so it is getting harder to identify the favorite, but always in the running will be my Hobby Master Showtime 100. It took me years to get one of these and I found it on Ebay from a French collector who had never displayed it, and I picked it up with shipping for about $180 when most examples were selling for $350 or more. Also very fond of my Century Wings "Pukin' Dogs" F-14.

Greetings,

A question about the 2007 - 2009 F-16 Orange Lion.

What was the exact version of F-16 used during the operation of the Orange Lion.....was it a F-16 A or B or C or D?

Thank You!

The F-16 used was a F-16 B (MLU) Build in the Netherlands by Fokker Aircraft Company.

Best regards,

RCMA
They're quite wrong there. It was a single seater. So, A-model. The Netherlands never used the F-16C. Webmasters should stick to what they do best: master the web... ;-)

it was indeed a tough call but here they are, in no particular order. worthy mentions include cw's santa cat and blackbirds trainer.
