Fantastic, brings back memories. These used to be based at RAF Mildenhall with the 10th ACCS. Saw them plenty times back in the late eighties / early nineties.

Callsign Axe10 was infamous for doing circuits for hours on end at "The Hall".

It's not in a scale that I collect but nevertheless very tempting.

Re: ARD Skyclassic EC-135H Silk Purse

Yeah, it is a pretty neat model, like always sky classics model is heavy with lots of diecast. Just one thing I am not so happy with is the ridiculously high price. This baby cost £12x, even with the ARD membership discount.
I will upload more photo of it when I have time.

Cheers

man that is a high price tag...

personally for me I can't justify spending that kind of cash for a model of that size.

Re: ARD Skyclassic EC-135H Silk Purse

Why does an electronic countermeasures aircraft have a refueling boom? Was this a converted KC?

Richard from Rotterdam 10-11-2013 05:13 AM

Re: ARD Skyclassic EC-135H Silk Purse

Yes The EC-135s were converted KCs.

Actually almost all EC-135s had the tailboom and they actually did normal refueling missions as well. These particular EC-135H's also had a hose-and-drogue system underneath the belly to support NATO and US Navy aircraft.

Re: ARD Skyclassic EC-135H Silk Purse

Straightly speaking, EC-135 is not a electronic countermeasurment AC. It is a airborne control and communication relay platform used to ensure US capability to control its nuke in case of ground control was disabled by enemy forces. They are part of US nuclear force even though they don't carry any weapon onboard. For more detail please see “operation looking glass" :)

And yes they are converted from KC-135A, with the refuelling capabilities retained.

Re: ARD Skyclassic EC-135H Silk Purse

From Wikipedia:
Operation Silk Purse was the United States' airborne nuclear command and control mission for the European theater of operations from 1961 through 1994.

The SILK PURSE mission were operated from Châteauroux-Déols Air Base in France by the 7120th Airborne Command and Control Squadron from the earlier 1960s using modified four-engined Douglas C-118 piston transport. The squadron moved to RAF Mildenhall in November 1965 and shortly after converted to the jet-powered Boeing EC-135H airborne command post. In 1970 the squadron was redesignated the 10th Airborne Command and Control Squadron.

The 10 ACCS transported an austere battle staff headed by a general or flag officer, designated the Airborne Emergency Action Officer (AEAO). This team stood ready to assume interim authority if European Command Command Center was destroyed or rendered inoperative.[1]

In the summer of 1984, Lajes undertook a new mission known as "SILK PURSE." Boeing EC-135s began operating out of Lajes Field as an airborne command post for the U.S. Commander-in-Chief, Europe. Along with the aircraft came the U.S. European Command battle staff and flight crews from United States Air Forces in Europe. This mission was ended in late August 1991.
