There are couple spotting locations at NYC. But, the last place I went to (the place where I took all those pictures) is the best amongst all the places, owing the fact that 13R/33L is now closed for construction.
The place is:
14815 230th Street, Springfield Gardens, NY 11413-4241. Look for a school and a soccer field. Go to the west side of the soccer field to take picture.
Another alternative is the T1 restaurant area. You can see all the traffic at the tarmac, but you'll be behind the window glass.
Another location is the parking lot of Costco/Burger King at Rockaway Boulevard. Take the Rockaway Blvd, pass the airport and you'll find the Costo down the road.
The best time for spotting at JFK is from noon to evening.
