My Other hobbies... What's yours?
I'm sure most people on here have other hobbies besides aviation/model collecting?
I wondered whether people on here might want to share their other hobbies and what is involved? Just to get a debate going... apologies if this has been done before.
So to start the ball rolling, my other hobby revolves around buses, whether it be photographing them, riding around on them or attending bus events on weekends. I also bought one a few years ago that I can recall from my school days. It has been restored to how it would've been when new in the mid 1980s.
I was due to take it to an event tomorrow but discovered the exhaust on the vehicle was so corroded, the hole it had last week, has since disappeared and taken some of the pipe with it! So now, the pipe from the turbocharger goes nowhere, instead of through to the silencer. Most people like things very noisy but sadly this is probably not legal.
For those interested in engines and a lot of noise, here's a vid from earlier today when I drove it around a bit after discovering it now has a 'straight-through' exhaust.
Exhaust woes on C920 FMP - YouTube
So, what else other than planes interests other DAC members?

Re: My other hobby... what's yours?
In addition to photographing and collecting diecast aircraft, I have photographed and collected diecast fire apparatus for many years. That is waning off a bit now since retiring from the fire department. Aircraft is quickly becoming number 1.

If DAC member A. Tupelov tells you he collects navel lint, he's lying. He collects ear wax, the older the better. He has quite an impressive collection. Some of it is sculpted into Star Wars characters.

My second hobby developed quite accidentally from my first hobby. I have now become very involved in building websites for other collectors, clubs, enthusiasts, organizations, and social networks.
Want your own website or social network? I can help!

Besides my life of aviation, I also have an interest in elevators, and enjoy riding and filming them. You can find me on youtube as "airplanegod", where you can see all my elevator, escalator, aviation, and random videos.

In what little free time I have I like to hit the track to de-stress with my go-kart and still race occasionally.

I've got more than I need for my candles, so you're welcome. Got some nose goblins too if you're interested.
As far as my hobbies, collecting seems to be a habit for me. I collect 1/2400 ships, 1/24 and 1/18 diecast cars, antique knives, swords and rifles, and hats. I also enjoy traveling (but rarely get the chance).

AN expensive addiction I would think.
Technology is without doubt my first love, even before model planes. I study Computer Science so there's that, but like lanceb love photography. Never could afford an L series, but I did just buy a new compact system camera, the NEX 5 to be exact. This ties in nicely with my love of travel.

I thought the same - I bought my first L lens a couple of months ago and think it'll be some time before I could afford another .

I collect 1:24 scale model cars of the 50s, 60s and 70s made by Danbury Mint and Franklin Mint, primarily Thunderbirds, Mustangs and Lincolns.
I'm also interested in music, film and anything relating to R.M.S. Titanic.

Nice to see a fellow DM/FM collector. If you like Mustangs, don't miss out on 1/24s made by GMP. I have several excellent models from them, including a '68 CJ 428 GT fastback, '67 500 and a '67 GT convertible. Personally, I'm more into GTOs and Cadillacs, but I love the T-birds, too.

That's interesting...do you collect current currency, or older coins? I have LOADS of coins from all over the place lying around that I've gathered either on trips away or holidays. Would be glad to send you some no charge if it'll help build your collection!
I have a few other hobbies apart from aircraft models- I collect books mostly on medieval/tudor history and books on Lufwaffe units and aircraft, and I also am keen on birdwatching.

Re: My other hobby... what's yours?
What a good topic, really interesting to read what other people collect. I'm into 1:18 scale diecast cars. Being from Australia and a Ford fan I collect ford racecars from the 70's and V8 Supercars from the current era. I also have models of several cars that I have either owned in the past or currently own. The best I can say about model aircraft is that a very few of them I have worked on as an aircraft technician or I have flown in.

Besides flying, models and fast cars. I collect vintage guitars, vinyl records and play music (not seriously, but enough to have fun)
Heres a couple from my collection-
1957 Fender Stratocaster, Blonde with Gold hardware
1958 Fender Stratocaster (this one has hang tags, catalogs etc. I bought it last year from the original owner in Arkansas and it is near mint).

Indeed they do. You know, sometimes I wish I got myself a bus driver's licence so I could buy one of those old MCW Metrobuses that KMB were getting rid of several years back. I wonder if anyone has bought one to preserve. I sincerely hope so, because what wasn't sold would've gone to the scrapyard.
Of the Metrobuses, my favourite ones are the latest Metrobuses that KMB acquired around 1989/1990: the 3-axle 11m type with ventilation system (but no air conditioning) and tinted windows. Not only do they sound wonderful, they look sooooo cool! This is the type I would've wanted if I could ...

Carving and painting decorative realistic fish.
It's actually my "first" hobby, but lately it seems easier and less time consuming to collect little airplane-shaped painted pieces of metal. Although the latter is more expensive . . .

The Lynx were damn fast machines. Those fitted with Cummins L10 engines, such as the one in the vid, were like rockets. The fastest I was going in that video was around 55mph however I know of drivers who managed to get around 70mph out of them. Just a shame the bodywork was prone to severe corrosion - just like in the image below. I had around 90% replaced on my bus.
It's been interesting to read what others do in their spare time. It certainly makes us all interesting individuals.

Re: My other hobby... what's yours?
My other Hobbies aren't really cheap either...
I play Electric Guitar, I own a Mexican Black and White Fender Stratocaster. A little crap amp, an a big heavy FX Unit that I spent $500 on. I'll probably spend about $200 on this vintage Korg Unit I found at a Guitar Boutique Downtown. $250 on a preamp, $225 on another pedal. And when I have the money, about $500 on a new Vox Amp. Somewhere down the road, a Les Paul.
Then there's the Photography/Videography thing. I need to replace my aging Canon Elura 20MC, it's a solid camcorder and still works well, but it's getting up there. Besides, the battery is massive, the tapes are a pain in the arse and because I like to makes movies, I'd like to be able to do so in Full HD. Looking at a Canon HF R20 or something like it for around Christmas Time. As far as photography goes, I'm looking at Nikon's Newer SLRs, probably for some time Early Next year. It will mark 2 years since I got the Fuji, on January 10th 2012! Around that is when I will try to replace it.
I'd like to buy a pair of Skis for the coming season. Haven't been out skiing since January 2010. But I really enjoy it.
Well, Fishing turns out to be one of my least expensive hobbies. Because I have the rod, the tackle and everything. And I can go whenever I want. Although it's not exactly the time of year, I hope I can get in at least one fishing trip next summer. All I need is a vest and maybe a few new lures.
I find Rock Climbing really fun. It's fairly inexpensive too, $20 and we have the whole gym for an entire day. I've liked it for a few years but never actaully joined the academy and got my license until this summer.

Re: My other hobby... what's yours?
All right...let's see here....
Diecast Automobiles; Mostly Japanese makes from the 90's and 00's. A lot of Nissans and Hondas in 1:64 scale.
Real Automobiles; Working on my beat-up 99 Honda Civic. Not impressive in any way but fun. I also help friends fix their cars. I also read automotive blogs a lot.
Anime/Manga; Eh, not into large robots too much, tho I do enjoy some mecha shows. More into the moe/loli stuff, which honestly is more of my taste. I do enjoy lots of action tho, as long as it is well thought-out. I watch a lot of anime but only buy sets that I like (not too many right now, thank god.)
Video Gaming; More into shooters and all that good stuff. Sonic The Hedgehog was nice too until the games became basically unplayable due to poor design.

Re: My other hobby... what's yours?
I love to run, I have completed 12 mini marathons, and 6 marathons, and I run Cross Country (XC) and Track for my school, I have made it to the state finals 2 times already in XC and 2 times in track running the 2 Mile, My mile time is 4:10 and my 2 mile time is 8:35. I am a JR in high school right now so i have 1 more year left so i have high hopes that i will make it back to state in both XC and Track, + I have a good shot of getting a scholarship to Purdue University (One of the best schools in IND) and they have a aviation technology degree program witch im hoping i can get into

If Obama gets re-elected, at the end of his second term that will be just enough for a Big Mac and fries. No Coke.

You need a girlfriend. Not a wife, not a fat chick, just a girlfriend.

Someday I will tell you the story about running like a scared little girl from the tornado that hit OKC in 1999 just about 2 blocks from my apartment building.
Sadly, I lost all the photos I took of the damage about 10 minutes after it crossed I-35 in Moore, OK and obliterated somebody else's apartment building.
