Default Lost Manufactures

Hi all,

I have a day off today and its raining down here in the emerald isle for a change so I was going threw an old flight case I have from when I was younger it was full of flight charts, timetables, operations manuals, checklists and funnily enough a Collectors Aircraft Models catalogue so I read threw and a thought came to me manufactures like Skyline, Historic Aircraft Models, Western have gone out of business....

But what I am wondering is did these companies go when CAM went or were they gone before CAM closed, an I am just mentioning the 1/200 companies leaving out all the other scales that are not around either....

And my last point is WHO HAS ALL THE SOVIET WESTERN, HISTORIC AIRCRAFT MODELS and were did all the ones go from CAM ?? Crownvic i think

p.s I know ARD have picked up some of manufactures which is good ! Also may I add just reading threw the pricelist from CAM they had some range of models and i I am after seeing models which i would love but dont think I will ever find again where did these models all go?????

Wink Re: Lost Manufactures

Western has morphed into the 'new' Western and slowly but surely offering interesting subjects of the retro variety. Their Connies are a sure-fire hit with many. As far as the original moulds are concerned, someone else will have to fill in that part of the story (if there is one to fill in)

ARD seems to be blowing life into Sky Classics (or so it seems) which used to be Skyline.

Historic Airline Models seems to have disappeared without a trace from all I have read.

That said . . . some new ones have bubbled up since: SmallWorld, Helmet Historical Aircraft, and Crescent Models. All making their mark in one way or another.

Anyhow, I'm sure a more another member here who is more up to date than I can take over and add the missing details.

I remember running across the CAM site for the first time years ago - I was amazed at the variety of retro airliners and quickly came up with an extensive wish list. Unfortunately most items were linked to the "Photo not available" graphic (I requested a few pics through an email which went unanswered). When I asked a British friend if he was familiar the verdict was not good - began with something about Braniff DC-8s having 707 stabililizers and went downhill from there. Over time I ran across photos of several CAM retro airliners and safe to say I would not have been happy - however it was a commendable try.

Love the new Western Models though - and actually a few of the old Westerns are pretty cool like the Airspeed Ambassador (I need one!)

The originals can be occasionally problematic though, so watch out. For instance the landing gear can be frightfully delicate and may not survive a shipping. (I underscore 'may' as sometimes once can be amazed!) I have heard tell that the metal for the u/c can deteriorate as well. SO I've heard, anyhow. The decals can also be occasionally dicey too. I have heard horror stories about these when they were new. I had piece of a cheatline come off on my fingers when inspecting Western's CPA Bristol Britannia 314 -- and that was new from the box -- yes -- my fingers were clean and dry! Needless to say, that sale didn't go through. (I went Corgi and 1:144 and still cherish my CPA Britannias!)

Helmet offer their built-up models AS kits as well. Your choice. I'm currently musing the kit version of the Air France Dragon Rapide. What's holding me back is my confidence in building a micro-sized model in resin and diecast. Those are two materials I have NO experience in. I should really just man-up and take on the challange, shouldn't I.

@ upkeep...Yea i have had a good few westerns over the years and have had problems with landing gear especially nose wheels no matter how good their packed ! But saying that i would love a couple of the military models they produced, thankfully smallworld are making a diverse range of types its just the wait time is so unpredictable......

Ok i must look into helmet a little bit more so i have seen some nice kits alright but kits are a nightmare for breaks n what not......i wouldnt have the patients to build a kit the model would end up flying out the window excuse the pun !!

I only saw a B-36 that Western did. I guess they did others, I didn't pay attention to their military stuff. Don't forget . . . SmallWorld models are a hand-made product by one guy.

You are not alone, that is why Helmet offers pre-built models with various options. Be forewarned though -- Helmet has lengthy wait times similar to SmallWorld too (hand-made). Certainly worth looking into, IMPO.

I believe that Martin acquired a lot of old Western castings (B-36, Tu-95, Tu-114, Tu-144), as well as some by MetalModels (C-141, B-47, B-1), and is doing them up as customs, and very nicely, too. A new level of craft, and improved decals. Might we expect An-22, Tu-22, C-124 in the future?

By the way, when shipping Westerns, it helps to cut the original foam packing around the u/c, so when the whole model moves, as it will, it does not shear off the struts.

I remember those days well. For me, it was, I guess, I ran into CAM in the late 90's or so. Yes . . . they 'taunted' with missing images, but the ones that WERE there made me drool alright.

I never did order anything from them, though.

I'm really fond of the 'new' Westerns -- specifically their Connies (warts, omissions, et al), but I have yet to buy one.
