the length i guess, 500 is just very stubby compared to the 300/400 i guess, thats how i tell the difference anyway. Theres no easy tell, like with the 734's extra emergency window exit

Seperate they are quite difficult to tell apart. But proportionally if you look at the 735 tail compared to the body it seems very tall. On the 733 the tail appears normal. Side by side you can tell the difference just by looking at the length.

737-500

737-300

The 737-500 is noticeably chubbier and shorter.

Also note the lesser amount of windows in front of the overwing exit.

Well, at first glance, I'll qoute Trev. Let's just say the -5 is "chubbier" than the -3. And the -500 looks like a guppy.

The only sure way I know of telling them apart is counting the number of passanger windows along the side of the fuselage. But since the planes you're spotting are in the air it probally won't work for you .

Hmm for some reason I always thought the 737's started off stubby and then lengthened as the series numbers grew. Good to know.

The 737-500 is 101 feet 9 inches (31m) long.

The 737-300 is 109 feet 7 inches (33.4m) long.

In NG terms. The 737-700 (737NG base model) was made to replace the 737-300, the 737-600 was made to replace the -500 (with a little more length), the 737-800 replaces the 737-400 and the -900 is a super stretch.

The B737-500 is slightly shorter and chubbier than the B737-300.
