Default 1:400, 1:500 or 1:600?

hi all, im new here and didnt really know where to put this thread. i wondered as you may have gathered in the title, what scale to collect. i already have around 12 schabak (1:600) planes but they are quite small. but then i have 2 herpa wings (1:500) and 2 gemini jets (1:400). im not sure what scale to really collect as i am going to or at least try to build my very own airport.

please give me advice on the right one to choose. thankyou

First off welcometo the hobby! If you want a really good variety go with 1:400. That is what I collect mostly. Gemini and Phoenix are the best. I have a few Herpa 1:500 and a few Skyliners 1:500 but they are to small for me! 1:400 is my favorite and is very highly detailed! Hope this was of any help to you!

Btw, this would probably go in the General Squalk Talk section of the forum.

Keep in mind, though, that it is possible to collect different scales. A lot of collectors do that... like me. I just figured that when I limited myself to just one scale, it strips the fun out of collecting. Not sure if it works for everyone, though.

It's also exciting to design airports in different scales.

I think that type of collecting works best when you collect only certain airlines or aircraft types. I have a large collection that's very diverse in types and airlines, and having different scales would be confusing, IMO. I like the consistency of a single scale (1/400).

Agreed. I try to make my airport primarily United States airlines but I don't limit it to just that. I love those nice surprises of seeing a foreign widebody or even a very rare foreign narrowbody.

It really depends on you. If you don't have alot of space for models maybe go with 1:600 or 1:500. Building a 1:400 scale airport compared to a 1:500 or 1:600 one is very different in terms of size. Personally though, I like 1:400 the best. Fits nicely with my tastes. Not too small and not too big. Quality is great and a wide variety of models to choose from.

I prefer :400, but do make sure you appreciate the scale chart, if you have constraints on display or storage space. Some guys on here collect widebody :200; I barely have room on my shelf for widebody :400.

Schabak :600 seems like a dead area to me. I bet you could amass a big collection for cheap. I don't know if they'll come back into style. Maybe I'm wrong, and people still actively collect them?

Welcome to the Hobby! It can be quite addictive but before you go any farther, you need to narrow down what you want to collect for your main collection. There is now so much offered in all scales. It comes down to money, storage space and available display space. My main collection is 1/400 for size and reasonable display of an airport diorama. But I do have a limited number of 1/500, 1/1000 and 1/200. Unless you are independently wealthy, you need to narrow your collecting down to your favourite airlines (fleet collector), by region, what flies into your favourite airport, etc. This way you can have some focus and direction to work towards. By doing this, you avoid ending up with models in your collection which you don't want a few years from now and trying to sell them only to get 1/2 of what their original value was! Its a fun Hobby but get your focus on what you want to collect now before you go to far. Happy Collecting!

I have a 1:600 Schabak in the back of my cupboard and I find it too small, lacking detail and with unrealistically large wheels. 1:500 IMO fits best for me as I don't have alot of space and the models are fairly well detailed. 1:400 will give you more detail but also at the cost of more space. Of course, if space and money is no object, go for 1:200.

It depends on the space you have. If only have a shelf for the models, go for 1:500, but if you have a larger space, go for the 1:400 or maybe even the 1:200! Never go for the 1:600, as the details are very poor and the wheels are unrealistic!

Personally, I would go for the 1:500 as I find the 1:400 models are just too big, and since I started my collection with the Singapore Airlines Heritage Series, which is in 1:500.

Go for what you love best..I was a 1:500 collector but after seeing the detail on 1:400, I switched to 400 scale immediately....but if space is no big deal try out the 1:200, that's some detail you'll find on those models.
Yea, don't go for 1:600, no detail, too tiny and like mentioned before the wheels look terrible and unrealistic.

Adam,
..... I've got to be bluntly honest with you... figure it out yourself. Since you have a variety of models, you can decide what you like best. Everyone in these forums have their own preference. I'm not going to suggest to you what to collect any more than you would to me. At 14 you can figure it out. You don't take a poll when ordering an ice cream cone. This is a simple decision. The choices get harder in life as you get older.
Dave (no suggestions, you decide)

welcome Aboard!
Consider first your expectations. What do you desire in a model airplane?
BUDGET, FINANCE, and SPACE
-Can you afford to maintain the hobby in that scale?
-Do you have room to house your growing collection?
MATERIALS AND QUALITY / ACCURACY
- Are you simply expecting a replica of the aircraft?
-Do you wish for all metal?, Do you wish for all plastic? Are you okay with plastic parts such as wings, vertical and horizontal stabilizers?
-Are you particular in the accuracy in the printing of windows, logos, details, cockpit / windscreens?
TARGET SUBJECT
-Are your most interested aircraft in that scale?

Obviously, the larger the model, the prettier, but keep in mind this is where you end up spending more. From one collector to another, collect what you like / love. It is easy to be inspired by so many other collectors, but ultimately, I find collecting to be an expression of your love for aviation. Most of all, enjoy the hobby.

Default 1:400

I have few 1:500 models, but I'm focusing my collection on 1:400 scale, brazilian airlines (VARIG, TAM, VASP, TransBrasil, Cruzeiro, BETA, Skyworld, OceanAir, etc), TAP (Portugal), TAAG (Angola) and some aircraft which had flown or flies (regular and non-regular flights) to Rio de Janeiro (GIG and SDU) airports.

I also like all Concordes (prototypes, Air France old/latest colors and BA old and Landor colors)) plus some russian/ukrainian-built (TU-114/154/144, AN-22/124/225, IL-18/62/86/96) aircraft and classic jetliners (VC-10, Comet, CV-990, DC-8, B707, Caravelle), but my #1 priority are the brazilian airliners.
