Re: Happy Fourth of July
..... I have a 4th of July story. It was 4 July 1970. I was in Viet Nam at the time serving with the Marines. I was in a squad, known as CUPP (Combined Unit Pacification Program). Our operating area was about 5-6 miles South of the LZ Baldy fire base. The squad set up our perimeter as dusk was setting in around 9PM. Everyone who wasn't on watch was suddenly woke up about 10PM. It seemed as if a fireworks company had set up on the fire base. Not just the usual flares, but real honest to goodness fireworks in all colors. Not only lit up the sky but the landscape as well. All kinds. Went on for nearly and hour and then the countryside once again was covered by darkness (moonless night).
..... We wondered if the Viet Cong or NVA were around to enjoy the show. The locals in the village loved it (though scared at first) and talked about it for weeks. A lot of guys must have made a road trips into DaNang to get all that stuff! By the way, no one was ever brought up for punishment either. I'm sure there were plenty of suspects, but the brass never went after anyone.
..... My 4th of July 1971 was spent aboard the USS America in the Mediterranean. They stood down for the day (holiday routine) so not even any flight ops to watch.
Dave (I've got TONS of stories)

Re: Happy Fourth of July
I was in Oklahoma, at Altus AFB in '82, when we had a drunken 4th. Chased each other around with Roman candles. Trust me, heavy drinking and fireworks, not a combo to guarantee a happy ending to the evening. Two of us have permanent reminders of that evening. Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Fourth.

Yes, the military equivalent of bottle rockets. These "no dong" missiles barely have a 250 mile range.
