Default Anyone into ship models?

Just wondering if we had any model ship collectors around here. Over the last couple of years I've been wanting to purchase a good model of a main ww2 battleship such as the Bismarck or Yamato, a u-boat , or maybe some of the merchant/freighter ships of the era.

I was wondering if maybe any of you guys could point me in the right direction as a good shop or builder than can make one of these models.

1/350 seems to be the right scale for the bigger ships while 1/72 works for the u-boats.

Right now I have just been drooling over some of the models in the gallery located at ModelWarships start page

If only I could model that good!

I don't collect them (thankfully) but I do have an interest in the Titanic.

I actually like cruise ships (don't give me too hard of a time please) ... particularly those by Royal Caribbean, like the Voyager class or larger. I don't have any, but I do own a 1/1200th scale Carnival Spirit model.

FalcoNg, do check out this website called "Maritime Replicas" ... I know the guy there, named Warren, and he does some AMAZING large scale replicas of a variety of ships, not just cruise liners. If you are interested, do contact him as he is THE expert in the biz.

Brass Ship Models : Classic Ship Models : Gift & Promotional Ship Models : Model Ships : Maritimereplicas.com

I wish he built COMMERCIAL airliners too!!!

Thanks for the link. Definitely bookmarking it for the future. Judging by the area code of the phone number they have listed, they aren't too far away from me.

Go to a web site name "SteelNavy", you'll be drowning in ships. A couple of the better brands are Trumpeter and Tamiya, and Dragon is also a great product. there are also many resin ship manufactures, a bit on the pricey side, but excellent stuff. You may have a hard time finding someone to build you a ship model with out spending serious money and waiting some serious time for it. I myself build/built commercial ships over navy ships, excepting of course 50's & 60's navy ships. the picture is a 1/350 brass R.M.S. Queen Mary...price...ooch!

If you're limited in room (and a 1/350 model of Yamato is pretty big), I recommend 1/1200 or 1/1250. They have some amazing models in that scale...a bit pricey, some can be upwards of $150, but worth every penny. Check out ** WELCOME TO THE ALNAVCO WEBSITE for some great models and dioramas.

You're welcome! They have a pretty comprehensive list of offerings ... I'm looking into a model of the "Voyager of the Seas" of Royal Caribbean someday.

That particular is about 34" long, so just enouth to add all the detail you would want. this one is 5'4" so about 1/200, even more detail you could add, if you want to go that way.

I forgot my sarcasm smiley on that last post. I'm definitely going to need to get one of these models one day. With these price tags, it sure isn't going to be at least for another 3 years or so.

actually the larger model (built it myself)cost about 1/2 the price of the smaller one, do your research and you will get what you want, many options out there.

Not my BuddyK. I've avoided like the plague pointing any of the juvenile delinquents posting at DAC over to The Buzz, the last bastion of intelligent adult conversation on aviation. The first one of these rug rats that starts posting stupid threads over there, I will hold you personally responsible.

Might I suggest to those interested in a unique model that is easy to paint and assemble the Matson Line's Class C-2 freighter, the HAWAIIAN PILOT. This model is in, "Box Scale" and is about 18 inches long.

The model was first released by REVELL in the 1950s for 69 cents and became a very pricey collector's item through the years going for a much as $100. A few years ago, it was re-released for $15 a copy and is now readily available.

Since I am a long term lover of this ship line my copy rests in a shrine to Matson.

YOu know what? I might be interested in building kit like this if it is more less not to hard for a beginner like me.

My main concern is with the painting though. What supplies did you use to paint it? Was it all done by a brush or did you use a can or maybe an airbrush?

Might stop by the local hobby shop tomorrow and see if they have this model instock

I did use a can of Testor's Red spray for the hull bottom. Other than that, all colors were applied by brush using Testor's enamels. Suggestion: Paint the yellow cargo crane bases before painting the Rust color deck. Paint the rust color up the insides of the molded stanchion edges of the deck. Then, paint the outside sides of the molded stanchions white or black, depending on the color of the ajacent part of the ship. While the attached painting shows the canvas cargo hold and lifeboat covers as brown, they should actually be Olive Drab (Testors has this in a bottle as well. The model is also available online.

Happy Modeling!

how about some deep sea diving, well.... about 4ft. actually. A 1/72 R/C Balao class WWII fleet sub (not Revell), I think it still runs. I also made a second boat to run on the surface, but with working torpedoes, which never really worked out well, they shot out of the tube and went directly to missile mode, hit the water and dived to the bottom, expelled their gas and bobbed to the surface, and that was the end of that project.

That would have been cool to watch anyway...what you made were actually ASROC torpedoes

might as well been that, it shot out so fast and the torpedo so light, it went about a foot in the air, traveled about 15ft then nose dived, funny as hell, but I did like goosing the ducks once in a while with the periscope, they never saw it coming.
