Default Moderators Moderating.....

Gentelmen (*cough* Steve Feser *cough*) with the recent resurgance of moderating, I think it is high time y'all come out with some sort of list of "Official DAC rules". Most other forums I visit have these as a "sticky" or front page item. Lay it all out.....make it clear as day for us all. What can we NOT DO?

We are currently working on a set of guidelines. With a new ownership structure and posting guidelines, DAC will not change for 99% of you.

We are working on it and announcements will be made soon.

Let me just say this, when you signed up, you agreed to the following:

"The owners of DA.C reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason."

What we are trying to do is to give you exactly what you are asking for dylan...

Please be patient.

And guys, remember... we can't satisfy everyone. Discussion forums for any topic on any website have become a place for crybabies to complain, braggers to brag, and normal people to get frustrated.

The social ineptitude of folks on forums is amazing; and trust me its not just DAC - I run other forums on other topics and the BS is the same; only the topic changes. Sadly forums are a place for people to be bigger than they really are and hide behind words; pumping up their own ego but ultimately destined for a hard crash.

Hey any of these forums it is their place not ours to judge posts. They are the ones allowing us to be here not the other way around.

Most of us realize this Craig. What I think alot of us would like is a clear and defined set of rules on posting, thread topics, etc. Alot of other forums I visit have this. This site, as of yet, does not.

Looks like N1786B has one in the works though.

I thought this one had something like this in place a couple of years ago! Or am I mistaken.

looking down your nose at the members is just insulting, doesn't matter if you moderate or own this website. your comment is way out of line...

i was literally lectured by one of your moderators for quoting a profane line out of a dave chapelle skit. it was a joke, he took offense, and i was censored and yelled at? but i can make a chauvinist comment, and get away with that... i'm sorry, but you need to establish what exactly triggers the moderators here...

Trying NOT to open the can of worms again here, quite obviously, rule number one is:

1).Do not give a bad review, criticise, or say anything else remotely irreverent about AeroClassics models or the people who run the company. Ever.
We mean it!

With your experience on DAC and other forums, you ought to know a little more about carrying a conversation with decorum.

Before you became a moderator, you were obsessed with how people should conduct themselves, frankly, it wasn't any of your concern then....now it just doesn't work because of agendas with spin.

You got off the wrong foot in a major way Team4R. I've never seen anything as nasty as your so called quote. And with the "in your face" attitude toward the owner, I can already see that you'll probably spend plenty of time on the hill. It's your choice; be a "team" player or hit the road.

Profanity, and being chauvinist, are two completely different things. And I am not necessarily 100% against either one so much depending on the situation and setting. If it were my forum I would let a certain amount slide, but it isn't mine so I do my best to play by the rules.

Your Chapelle skit quote was rather tacky and had nothing to do with the thread itself. Any of us could (and probably did) click on the link to see the skit for ourselves without you, or anybody else, narrating it for us. What works for Dave Chapelle does not work for you nor does any of it belong here as I don't recall Mr. Chapelle doing any skits about diecast models. If you think you can get away with quoting Chapelle anywhere then I would dare you to walk into a place where the brothers hang out and go up to a group of them and say "I'm Rick James, b****." They might be nice enough to call the coroner after they were done with you.

On a side thought: Is it just me, or are a majority of newbees showing up here with huge chips on their shoulders and/or trying to impress the members here with how 'shocking' they can be thinking that it is cool?

Steve, we have 400SH for that.
Are you still not getting that the reason for alot of folks to come/came here was the fact that we could engage in a flame war, or drop drop the worlds best adjective/verb/noun, the f-bomb?

Involving this hobby alone, I am part of 4 other forums. I conduct myself according to the style of the forum. It's a good mix going to all the forums...even 400SH. I know how I am expected to behave on that site, so I do. For the longest time, this forum allowed a much more heated, "anything goes" type of atmosphere. That is what made this forum ALSO fun to to vist...and I behaved accordingly.

I hope the above has opened your eyes a little bit as to why I lack "decorum" on here, and have it on other sites. Don't give me some lame "you should know better" response. I started a legitimate thread, with a legitimate question, that was not motivated by agenda or my less-than-colorful disposition.

Here are a few more legitimate questions:

1-What is your long term goal for this forum as a mod?

2-Why now? Now; meaning last few months. Real question Steve. Was it due to complaints? A directive from our absentee owners? Why now?

I believe most of the forum members would like an answer to these questions. I am not being antagonistic either, I really WOULD like answers to these questions.

Well said Nick. Perhaps the desire to impress or come off as a badass for some of the newer members comes from the increasingly more prevelant desire to live life vicariously on a forum. The Chappelle comment reminds me of an episode of The Office where Michael Scott (Steve Carell) tried to randomly do a Chris Rock routine... quoting comedians at random that you share no commonality with isn't funny... my 7th graders do that kind of crap.

me? how many members have you offered help or advice to in the last week? god forbid i should joke around with you all, but i guess i didn't realize this forum is some kind of 'old boys club.' i'll be sure to ask for permission before i post in another thread...

lufthansa340, love the herd mentality...

dylan, i apologize for destroying your thread. i had originally posted in support of you... but, alas, things get carried away, so i'll stop now...

Dylan,

As you may know, I do not participate on the other forums. And based on your thoughts about "The Wild West Of Airplane Collecting," you may wonder why I participate on DAC. It's fairly simple.

DAC was the first site I stumbled upon after I had been collecting for roughly two years. The reason I joined was obvious; gather information, share experiences, shoot the breeze, etc. Cutting to the chase, the one thing I noticed was the constant bickering among various members. And it was during those fun loving threads that I started to spoof these members directly or indirectly through statements where you would have to read between the lines. This was fun because it was a form of comic relief. You ask why I did this? Because the bickering grew boring rather quickly. The sad part is wondering whether some of these members really have some loose screws. And that's when things began to change.

As time went on, I would directly ask the member about their reasoning; just as you are with me. Fast forward to a year ago, michael noticed this and asked me if I wanted to volunteer to be a moderator for two years. I said sure, I'll give it a try.

My input with the moderation game plan didn't start a few months ago. It started in September, '07 when I signed the agreement. Heck, you should have caught wind when I started the "Cursing" thread in January. Whether implementing a new strategy or dealing with individuals, it all takes time. The long term goal is to help promote a healthy degree of decorum among members so that everyone feels comfortable in participating.

I will continue to serve DAC as moderator for the remaining year unless the owners no longer need my services. My pm box is always open and all members are free to contact the owners if and when they have a problem with me. In this way, the owners can contact me with advise.

Saw that, excellent parallel, I was thinking the same thing when I read that post. Offensive and utterly inappropriate.

No herd mentality friend... just an honest opinion. Grow thicker skin and if you want to share your sense of humor maybe try being more topical... it might work better.

To The Mods And Owners!

First I Can Respect The Fact That You Work Hard To Do Your Best In Shaping An Ever Evolving Forum, And I'm Sure It's NEVER Possible To Please Everyone, But Please Remember Too Much Moderation Or The Lack Of Any Tolerance To Minor Street Language Or The Arguements Of Late Does Affect The Quality Of Posts.
Myself I Will Prolly NEVER Go Away, But I Feel Ever Less Inclined To Post Pics Of 1:1 Or Beautiful Portraits Of My Collection (Remember I ONLY Take Pics To Post,Share And Brag For You Guys, But I've Lost 100% Interest Due To Deleting Of Some Of My Posts)& I Gave Up On Dissertations Altogether.
Now I'm Only One Member, But I Wonder Howe Many Others Can't Help But Feel Annoyed When Their Harmless But Perhaps A Little Heated Thread Disappears.
Quality Participation Only Comes From Gratification Once You Made A Post Or Thread.
That Is My Opinion. I Don't Think I'm Wrong Here.

Also Remember, The Heated Threads Of The Past 2 Years Or So Are Not Even REMOTELY Severe As Say 4 Years Ago Or Longer. I Think A Little Freedom Is Not Much To Ask For
As Long As It Doesn't Get Too Far Out Of Hand.

PS To Talk About Models ONLY Is A Bit Boring.

You know Heavy you and I have more in common then I thought. Great post!

I sincerely apologize for any sarcastic posts about you in the past.

All it would take to resolve the heated posts would be a few sincere posts toward the collectors from Andrew Klien and his two paid off supporters, you know, the guys that own that other web site.

I really thought it was you and Crownvic who had the comic relief. His "Guess what plane this is in the box" and his pics by the pool were amusing(Wings900 is somewhat more funnier as this one but it has its comedian like here). I am here to answer aviation related and model related ones too. Somehow the last time I wanted to get someone to stop whinning was the complaint about the Gemini 200 scale models. This reminds me of flying, some it is fun and entertaining and they get addicted to it and some find it hard and frustrating and do not know what to do. I can understand it can be frustrating, but don't let one problem get to you and go on and try again or find something else to buy or do.

We all have different views with collecting, and mine deals with my career.

I answered Dylan's questions as it pertained to moderating. This is totally separate from our views of collecting and participating on DAC. Moderation will keep me busy, but once it's done for the evening, I'll go back to some of the subject matter and participate like any other member. Member participation has always been fun whether it envolved straight or light hearted conversations.

DAC has a great bunch of guys and gals like you that wouldn't make me find something else to buy or do.

I am glad to see the moderators moderating more moderately. Thank you, fazeman for giving that zinc rot thread a chance and not zapping it, we from the collectorate really appreciate it.

In no way would I delete that thread. It is extremely important. I had to delete a number of posts on it because of the insane political stuff. That particular thread needs straight input from the collectorate as per its title.

Of late, I had to lock or delete some threads because of the hair brain posts that ended up on them. It really makes me wonder if some members are drinking while driving (posting).
