My guess would be SAA (E). Cheers! T7

Ordered 4 of them, but were replaced by 2 of the Queen of the Skies.

Definitely know Qantas never followed through with the order. It's why it kept flying B 767's till last year and is still holding onto B747ER models atm. It also only ordered half its allocation of A380s. It's now finally getting some B 787s to fill its fleet needs.

I dont think Qantas ever ordered the 777, Im guessing SAA too. Did Iberia order 777s?

Here is the cancelled order of B 777s for Qantas

Did Qantas bet the house on the wrong planes?

I first went with Qantas, but changed to South African Airways since they 'actually/officially' placed their 4 B777-200 orders with Boeing.

The article in the link above, only mentions the following
Orders for the Boeing 777 were put aside despite it being a more established and flexible aircraft.

If you read that statement, it more aligns with an internal procedure within Qantas executives not to go with the B777-200 and that they never officially approached Boeing with any firm orders for the B777-200. That's my take, based on the statement outlined within that article. I never saw the word 'cancelled firm orders with Boeing' in the article?

I'm thinking that Qantas execs were on the fence with the B777-200, and decided not to pull the trigger and submit 'official' paperwork to Boeing for the World's Best Aircraft. Oh well, lesson learned on the part of Qantas.

The key words in that Qantas statement were 'put aside'; this usually means that they thought about it and after several discussions amongst themselves, they decided not to approach Boeing with their firm orders for the B777-200.

Looks like Qantas learned their lesson from the B777-200 experience; they are looking at the B777x as a potential replacement for their A380s down the road.

Interesting, it looks like Qantas didn't learn from their first go around with the B777; they pulled the trigger on the 'Super Whale' and passed on the B777-300ER.

The Boeing 777X is the latest addition to Boeing's best-selling 777 family, including the 777-300ER – which many in the industry believe Qantas should have originally ordered in place of the Airbus A380.

your good, SAA was the right answer, back in November of 1995 they had ordered 4 777-200 with options for 3 more but the order was put on hold indefinitely... but it would have been cool to see SAA operate the mighty Boeing 777...

I think your right, even though Qantas was part of the 8 member 'Working Together' team of airlines that Boeing had invited to work on developing the Boeing 777 in the beginning, they as in Qantas never ever ordered any of the Boeing 777 or it's other variants... but i tell you what, it would've been nice to see the old kangaroo logo on any 777 aircraft!

The last 767 service was in late Dec 2014.

QF one of a number of airlines that was asked for their input during the design stage of the 777 was the only carrier to never order it.They were keen on the 777LR at one stage.

The eight options on the A380 are unlikely to be taken up as they have said on a number of occasions that the balance is right with the current twelve in the fleet.
