Are you actually moving to Australia, or just visiting? And how are you planning to acquit yourself...or have you done something wrong? Or maybe you just want to acquaint yourself instead. I'm so confused...

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
I have plans to be in Perth & the top end. the gorgeous oceans in the north & Perth. I don't plan to spend more than a few weeks in the SE, just long enough to do some tourist stuff i.e. Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb.
NO plans at all for the outback unless my flight flies over it . I would like info on day to day expenses (how much is the stupid carbon tax and what's attached to) i.e. what's the internet cost, what's the food like in general. I would luv to know more about the current going ons in the country, etc.

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
Australia is one of the most expensive contries in the world to live in. We pay more taxes than anyone else in the world and we have a bunch of clowns running the governements.
In saying that is a great place to live and I love the people, my job and all the things I do.
I have a wireless service with Telstra (leading phone company) I get 8gb of data for $59.
Do you like sand? There isnt to much to see in Perth (most will disagree with me). I highly recommend Melbourne (GO Collingwood!!). Its my favorite cooler place in Australia. Awesome culture, great food and coffee and so sports orientated. For warmer things to do, dont go past cairns or a place like Hamilton Island. They are our tropics and are located on the Great Barrier Reef.
Hope this helps.

You're very welcome. Correcting spelling errors is just one of our jobs. And might we suggest Ambien for your chronic insomnia...of course, always with a doctor's supervision.

LOI, you do have your moments...
Been there done that; the meds given are too strong for me, leaving me w/ side effects that impair me during the day.

Sorry, I certainly didn't mean to mock your illness, I had no idea you were serious about the insomnia. Good that you are planning a trip danundah, always wanted to go there myself, but my time is getting shorter to do such a thing. And my wife hates flying.

It does mate, but despite sympathies w/ you statement about taxes, it rates about 60/222 in the world rankings for highest taxes. Anything about the carbon tax? Is it just for petro, what other fuels? Why not go past Cairns or Hamilton Island?

Above cairns and that its all the same just with crocs and stuff.
Carbon tax doesn't affect petrol. Paying about $1.40/L right now. Cost of living is high though including paying food etc

I'm not sure 'acquitted' is the appropriate word, unless you're intending to commit a crime with an Australian and are hoping the law will let you off???
He he, just kidding! I'm sure you'll find a lot of very friendly Aussies, they're a great nation, lots of excellent people there! I hope you enjoy your visit/time there

I'm 56 and don't want to one of those old fart tourists...I want to enjoy an active vacation. A boat ride to Australia is too long and expensive, so that's kind of out. I look at it this way, I never got to walk on the moon either, so I'll just watch the Travel Channel....

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
The Sydney harbour bridge climb is worth it.
There are heaps of things to do in Sydney. Not sure why you want to spend less time over this side. If you live here its a bit of a pain. Traffic is becoming third world and the cost of living and buying property is just stupid.
If your doing a bridge climb, you might as well take a ride on the Manly Ferry. That costs about AUD12.00 return and is a 45min each way cruise up the harbour and you see all the best things Sydney has too offer. Great pass of the Opera House twice!! Bondi Beach is good for tourists if you want to see a classic Australian icon - no cost there except maybe a bus ride from the city - a few $$ there but cheap.
Food is reasonable and affordable. Transport is affordable. Plenty to do in this town.
Good luck with your stay.

I don't do the usual "tourist" things , such as the opera house (my interest in architecture isn't' that strong) local icons, especially this or that place to eat or drink @. I coming down to interact with the people and my strongest interest; the ocean. I might end up rescuing the Kola's or taking reef measurements; my friends i imagine will be interested in the ocean as well, unless i'm on a date i wouldn't care @ all about where to dine or crowded beach to go to w/ the other tourists.... thanks for the info

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
As for Perth ...
Well, lanceb is right, there isn't as much to see as there is in Sydney. If you like the beach, well, Perth has plenty of that.
What sort of activities are you interested in? If it's shopping, there's a fair bit of that available on Hay Street Mall and Murray Street Mall in the CBD. If you like sight seeing, hire a car and drive east into the hills, or go to Kings Park, or even just take a few days exploring the south west of Western Australia. The town of Margaret River, about 3 hours drive south of Perth, is rather famous for wine.
If you like plane spotting, there's a reasonably decent viewing deck at the base of runway 03 at PER/YPPH

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
I got the skinny w/ directions for plane spotting in Perth, but my MAIN interest is the Ocean (i get happy just thinking about it, here sharkys, sharkys ). BUNK to the shopping, i can do that from my PC, but i would luv info on where to buy 1/200 or 1/400 planes down under! (i thought that info would be obvious to anyone who saw this post )

Well then, if your main interest is in the ocean, then Perth has plenty of beaches for you to choose from. I'm not much of a water sports kind of person, so I don't know which beach has the best surf ... etc. Go for a hike around the coast, and when you see a nice spot, jump in for a swim
I share your sentiment with regards to shopping, but I thought you might have a significant other who would enjoy it.
As for 1/200 and 1/400 models ... there's really not much choice here, and what we have here are over priced:
1. Triking Model Cars on Hay Street used to have a sizeable collection, but now it's dwindled to little more than a shelf full of 1/400s.
2. City Models in Piccadilly Arcade has a few more to choose from - mostly recent release GeminiJets and Phoenix Models. City Models have model trains galore if you're into that.
3. Stanbridge's Hobby Shop on Railway Parade specialise mainly in kits and RC, but they have a handful of 1/400 Dragon Wings.
4. Perth Hobby Centre - perhaps Perth's largest 1/400 store, with GJ, PH and DW, some 1/200s as well, but there's still not that many there.
Unlike West Main Toys in Hong Kong, there's no store in Perth that specifically sells die cast aircraft models and nothing else.

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
very nice beaches.... yes, most are Great White Shark infested .... we do have beautiful and scenic beaches though (best in spring/summer...depends on when you are arriving/touring).....southwest has some really scenic coastal spots you will ever see from Albany in the south to Augusta and up through Margaret River et al......north of Perth is great too coastal-wise (google Exmouth, Broome, Coral Bay and Monkey Mia)....cost of day-day living is higher than other civilised places and it gets more and more expensive the further you travel out from a capital, especially like far north of Western Australia..... check out AAWA site for plane-spotting in Perth area ...a newly built viewing area near RW03 threshold should amuse you some .... no models here really apart from the crumbs that are on offer locally ala what CXB77L wrote....
enjoy your stay and happy/safe travels when you come down-under .....

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
I agree that we pay top dollars for our tax in Australia. I have to disagree with your comment on Perth. State of Western Australia has beautiful beaches along its coast line. We enjoy both Indian and Southern Ocean. You do not have to travel inter state to enjoy tropical weather. There is Broom with famous Cable Beach. Regarding Collingwood. Nowhere near West Coast Eagles.

Re: WANTED: Aussie pen pals
I was wondering what the utilities cost more or less, when one rents what are they expected to pay for, electric, gas, etc.
Anyone know what kind of internet speeds are available in places like Broome?

We used to call them "Septics" which is a shortened version of Septic Tanks which rhymes with Yanks. Colloquialism at its best!
