Is there anything sadder
....Than an old abandoned theme park?
Yes, people said the place in the video below was crap, but that didn't matter, because it entertained and excited a much larger amount of people than the nay sayers could ever hope to meet.
This video is a bit poignant for me, because I used to to volunteer for a charity based in Prestwick (of the airport fame) working with kids with cancer, and Loudoun was one of the places we'd take the kids too.
Take it from me, almost every shot in this video echoes to the shouts and squeals of delight from thousands of children and adults alike, and what's more, some of them won't be here now either.
Enjoy (I can't embed it on this device incidentally).

Yeah, I agree with you. Here is Disney's River Country, located at Fort Wilderness Walt Disney World Resort.

Re: Is there any sadder
That Louden park must have some good security, or Scots are better behaved. We had a dinky theme park that was closed some years back. First, some religious weirdos took it over, then it was a flea market, now it's just vacant. But the little hoodlums have pretty much trashed the place.

The gates are open apparently, but it is slightly in the middle of nowhere, which might explain some things.

Re: Is there any sadder
It's a ghost town.. Kinda quiet...
Speaking of abandoned stuff, how about an abandoned house, proves to be haunted, would you have the guts to roam and explore inside the house?
I would take it as a challenge. Besides ghosts are only restless souls left behind in this world. I would totally be up for the challenge!

If I believed in ghosts (which I don't), I would have to determine what kind of haunting it is. As Rocky asked Bullwinkle, "Are they friendly spirits?" Otherwise, I would have to say "Nah" on disturbing the ghosts...I mean, would you like it if someone came trespassing in your house?

No problem, us American's are used to poor use of the Queen's English, so we did not notice the typo.
This is a great thread, thanks for starting. It's original and interesting.

Re: Is there anything sadder
This place is quite close to me.
We never had any hard hats when we visited. It is potentially quite a dangerous place though, because there are sudden drops where stairs, walls, floors and balconys used to be, and the building was designed with some huge spaces and vaults in it, so some of these drops are actually of a good 2 or 3 storeys, maybe more, so, for the sake of your health, you need to be careful and look where you are stepping!
It opened 1966 amid many design awards. It closed in 1980 and has been derelict ever since.
What a waste.
A (slightly odd) musical video of the ruins:

And what it used to be like:

Re: Is there anything sadder
Well, Six Flags New Orleans will apparently finally be demolished starting next year, making way for some outlet malls. The park never reopened after Hurricane Katrina, spending just under 3 years under the Six Flags banner. The park sat under several feet of salt-water for over a month before being drained, and the every ride save one was considered a total loss. Six Flags simply abandoned the park, and failed to comply with their lease (which required rebuilding). After 5 years, New Orleans sued and reclaimed ownership of the land, and has been spending something close to the last 6 years in an attempt to find someone willing to re-develop the area.
But, before the lights go out on the park for good, 20th Centry Fox is filming Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters in part at the park.

Some of these theme parks, if we were all to be wiped out in one way or another, and then aliens came, what the heck would they think?!

I looked at the rest of the Abandoned Scotland films from the same series as this one. The music that accompanies them makes them quite eerie and moving.

I actually thought the music might get a bit irritating after a while for some, but thankfully you have got the jist of the films.

Re: Is there anything sadder
I'll tell you a story of that Globe seen from 2:40 onwards.
That was a ride where you rode on swings going round and round, the swings contra rotating with the globe to give the impression of travelling across a planet, although the swings were never high enough.
Anyway, one day I was there with a group of other young adults and the day had been warm.
We all went on this ride, and as we did, the heavens opened, and take it from me, it was TORRENTIAL!
We went round on this ride, getting utterly soaked, but, because of the heat it was quite refreshing in a way.
The downpour lasted about the same as our ride, and as we got off, the people waiting, and hiding under things to avoid the rain must have thought we were utter loonies because, we came off, with HUGE grins on our faces, it had been quite the most exhilarating thing we'd done all day!

Reminds me of Kentucky Kingdom up in Louisville, Kentucky. Place is a ghost town. If you fly into SDF, you'll fly over it.

Re: Is there anything sadder
Scratch my last comment-if you guys are ever in Queens, you should stop by Flushing Meadows Corona Park-former site of the 1964-1965 and 1939-1940 World's Fair...today, very few structures from both fairs stand....the Queens Museum of Art from the 1939 WF, the Unisphere from the 1964 WF, and the New York State Pavilion from the 1964 WF. What's sad about it is that if you go up to the NYSP and look at it (not too many people do), you can see the history in it. The NYSP consists of a large circular structure and about three observation towers adjacent to each other. They are deteriorating. The pavilion in general is striking in design, but its really sad to see it in that state. That pavilion sits in desolation-47 years from its time. It really can be considered "a modern ruin".

From what I've heard, the locals would happily burn it all down anyway, they have been buggered about with by the London Olympic Commitee and the relevant authorities, and the disruption caused to them started several months ago and will last long after the end.
Such is the obsession with security, they have installed missile launchers on the roofs of people's flats, local amenities have been closed, there is massive wasting of money, and people are not being able to park outside their own homes without getting a pass to do so, not to mention quite a few other things too, it REALLY could have been organised a lot better!
Do you know that they will be treating the events like the departure lounge of an airport? You won't be able to take in your own drinks FFS!
I think several people are hoping the discuss, Javelin or hammer will hit Sir Seb Coe and his cronies....
Oh, and the greenest games ever my arse!

With over 13,000 soldiers and everything from AFVs to rooftop AA missiles on watch, I don't think the government is going to make up the cost of this deployment.

Tickets? It depends. Some of the super special ones are going for anything up to £500 per event, but most are between £10 and £50 per event. The Paraolympic tickets are cheaper than those for the 'warm up games', being typically £10 or £20 for each event, so I see them making a dirty BIG profit off it all!
Some, such as the marathon and road cycling are free, but that's only because the routes are too long for the little Hitlers at security to cage everyone up

Apparently it isn't as bad as people thought, even now that they have put the rest of the tickets on sale after public outcry over empty seats which were intended to corporate customers who then didn't turn up.

I kept looking for a 757 in the video until I realized you must have made a typo. According to the narrator, the plane was at least 21 years old.

You must've been referring to the wrong video ( I was referring to Airbro's video). I checked it out, she was actually a 17 year old 200. Sad to see nonetheless.
