Default A day at Zantop...

Once every year, I find myself in Toledo 5 days. Naturally, the only thing to do is go to one of two places: Cedar Point, or Detroit. On this particular visit, I decided to head up to KYIP and catch some cargo action...maybe see some Kalitta 727's, National DC-8's, or USAJet DC-9's (BAX closed the Toledo operation in June 2011, so no more ATI DC-8's every night)

Upon arrival at the fence by the old Zantop building/B-24 plant, I saw that they had moved around the old Electra's and, sadly, cut up the Beech 18 Volpar Frankenliner (N600WA) since the last time I was there in 2010. After taking a few pics with my phone, I walked over to a door leading directly into the side of the giant hangar to see if I could see anything interesting inside. Nothing inside but airport snow removal equipment, but I noticed something weird; the door had no knob. I pulled, it opened. I backed up to see if there were any cameras, no trespassing signs, or "prohibited" signs. Nothing.

Once inside it was like a weird step back in time with a twilight zone vibe. I'll let the pics do the talking.

One of three bays, divided by large plastic curtains:

Now the weird part: The offices.

What was weird was that all the lights were still on...after 7 years! No wonder DeToilet is in such ****ty shape!

After walking through over a thousand feet of a maze of hallways, GOLD!

Wanted to take a manual, but was already nervous about being in here uninvited and everytime I took a pic, the shutter sound from my phone echoed through the whole place. My only loot was a Zantop coffee mug.

Oh, and I got to see my 727's

Super cool! I may be near TOL next month, might have to check that out. Was that an actual sim or an FTD in the building?

What a shame to see those beautiful Electras just languishing out in the open. Hope someone can rescue them & return them to their former glory.

"My only loot was a Zantop coffee mug." If a Zantop coffee mug shows up on eBay, I'll know where it came from... Great day in the twilight zone. Thanks for the post, Keep 'em flying, Doug

Very nice Dylan. Thanks for sharing.

I can be wrong but I think there Zantop L-188 were former VARIG aircrafts that operated for more than 30 years in the Rio de Janeiro-Sao Paulo air bridge.

Cool Re: A day at Zantop...

Great photos, but a fantastic story. Eerie to see the place just empty and no one around -- even more surprising you weren't discovered and questioned. Maybe next time a video camera?

Regardless, thanx for sharing the experience!

You KNOW those lights haven't been on 7 years. Judging by some of the McDonalds and Arby's trash with recent logos, I'd say that some of the Kalitta/YIPAA use these offices as a dump. Just very eerie to imagine the possibility that they just moved out one day in 2004 and left everything as-is.

Lots of shoulder checking. Every time I clicked my camera on my phone, the shutter sound was echoed through the place. I was scared of my own shadow in there. But with not a single sign and a missing knob, I wasn't too worried about getting discovered.

It was an LD 10 Container. Couldn't varify if it was from Pan Am I or II.

Note the different paint jobs on the 722s - with charter flying, I always get an uneasy feeling when no two planes are painted alike - happens a lot. These are freighters tho. Outta here, Doug

Hey Dylan,
What a rush to be canvasing a place that at one time was a busy office now left to the elements. Reminded me a bit of the "Earth after People" show. Being in a deserted area
must have had you wondering if you were truly alone in there. A very interesting report and photos from the Twighlight Zone over at Zantop. Meanwhile the world and time spin by leaving it all relegated to a bubble in time.

Gary, a nice photo you have of the Convair 640 in Zantop colors. A rare find. Thanks for bringing that.

Best,
Herb
