Great Disappointment in Microsoft Flight
Microsoft Flight Trailer - YouTube
Well, I guess somebody had to post this information so I thought I'd share with you this link and my feelings about Microsoft's decision.
In the video, you will assume that the beloved creator of the Flight Simulator franchise has once again disappointed all us enthusiasts. We thought that even though they removed the 'Simulator' word in the title, we thought it would be much the same as the previous products-FSX, FS2004, FS2002 etc.
But much to our dismay, they have decided to ship all the elements found in FSX to create an arcade game essentially. Comprised of missions it seems only. I am rather disappointed because I was hoping for a newer, better version of FS that was less-laggier and more detailed with the graphics and clouds. All that hope is now lost, and once again we will continue to fly in FSX until a better solution has been solved

Re: Great Disappointment in Microsoft Flight
I really don't know what they are doing. Is this free version really all there is going to be? I keep thinking they'll release the free.version and later a pay version with a full simulation option later down the road. Most likley they are going less simulation and more microtransactions. I don't know what to think.

I thought they made it clear they were killing off the simulator as we knew it - didn't they shut down the division that made the game?

Yes, they did shut down ACES Studios back in 2009.
I'm still confused, the Microsoft website still mentions in their FAQ that Flight "retains the full fidelity simulation." So is it still a simulator with a game mode attached?
As for the add-ons I assume that it'll be like the app store. You have to submit your add-on the Microsoft for approval and for a piece of the $$$. So I gather there will still be add-ons. I have read though this new model has already scared off developers.

It doesnt even look realistic like FSX.
Looks like an arcade game.. not sim.

On looks I think it looks better than or as good as FSX with no add-ons or tweaks. FSX with some tweaks and minimal add-ons is breathtaking. I'm just wondering about the "sim-iness" of it.

It was never intended to be. They stated up front it was entirely different and would not be like the past FS sims.
It was not created for the hard core simmer, it was created for anyone, even your grandma
Hard core simmers will stick with 2004 or FSX.
I've read tons of threads on sim sites that are having a fit over this, however they don't read what is posted by Microsoft since day one.
Guess many can't comprehend the written word.

Not only that, but I remember the Microsoft Flight Sims were pretty hard to sell according to a friend who works for a video game shop.
More appeal to more customers, perhaps. Arcade mode will probably be pretty fun too, don't worry...

Its impossible to compare a sim to an arcade type flying game. While MSFS weren't great sellers ala Halo they did sell enough to make a profit. I think a lot of us are upset that MS is dumping us simmers.

Re: Great Disappointment in Microsoft Flight
This is MSFS how I remember it years ago. It was a fun way to blow off 30 minutes or so and you didn't need to have a 200 page manual sitting next to you to figure the dam thing out. I say good on them for making it simple and free.
Who here remembers the basic flight sims of the early 90s?

Re: Great Disappointment in Microsoft Flight
The initial launch video that Microsoft displayed at the E3 conference demonstrated amazing graphics to which I hoped that by their statement that it wouldn't be like any other sim, I thought they meant it wasn't going to be like it framerate or graphic-wse because that initial commercial really impressed me. On my current computer specs, FSX on extremely high settings runs at a steady 6 FPS and with the CS 767, only 3. I have FS2004 but I barely use it because of it's graphics and autogen.
What's the latest version of XPlane, and those of you who already have it, how do you like it?

Re: Great Disappointment in Microsoft Flight
The flight sim is dead. It's painful to hear people say the Play Station game Ace Combat is a flight simulator. It's nothing of the sort. However it appears Ace Combat is the way forward for new flight games.
I remember when flight sims were at their peak - in addition to Microsoft Flight and Combat sim, there were F-22 Raptor, Apache vs Havoc, Commanche vs Hokum and considered to be the best of the best - Falcon 4.0. The last great flight sim in my mind is Il-2. Ironically subtitled "Forgotten Battles", more like forgotten flight sims in today's world

I don't own it but was thinking about it until I read all the comparisons to FSX, XPlane is no where near FSX as far as scenery.
I guess cities and airports have no buildings, traffic, scenery to speak of.
Most all the hard core simmers on the sim sites say FSX is far superior.
XPlane10 came out but all the reviewers say they updated very little.
Looks like FSX will be the sim for a while.

Already did (well, not cadet but pilot license) now I fly both (real plane and sim) and guess what,
the simulator is much cheaper to fly

Well, there is Free Falcon that is always being worked on (and that's essentially Falcon 4.0 released as Freeware). There is also the DCS Sims, like DCS: Black Shark and DCS: A-10C Warthog. Both are very realistic and have a similar feeling of Falcon, with all the switches and weapons systems. It was made by the same folks who made LockOn, but much more of a focus on making it a more realistic sim, so therefore, only one player-controlled aircraft per sim is released. They are planning more too.
IL-2 is far from forgotten, in fact, I have it, and sometimes play online (though damn, it's hard to do much there, coupled with all them rich kids with TrackIR and the Old Boys Club, it isn't a very "newbie friendly" place! Especially coupled with the insults you'd get when asking for advice.) Couple that with Ultr@pack, it adds a ****load of more realism to the sim, as well as more controllable aircraft (even a few 1950s jet fighters, and the AC-47).

I could, but it's economically unfeasible to have a Tu-154B2 these days unless you're some kind of A list celeb or some SP500 listed company CEO.
Anyways, why is everyone surprised. They said from the beginning that this was aimed more at people who were not too familiar with the more complex simulators. I think that M$ wanted to capitalize on the addons market too, let's not forget, there are a lot of games that are free to play, but to get certain goodies in these types of games, you have to actually buy them (in other words, spend asinine amounts of money for it.)
As for X-Plane being less superior to FSX? I have never used X-Plane, but I have have heard that X-Plane does have a bit more realistic modeling in how the aircraft tends to behave. That is what I recall it had going for it the most.

Have MSFSFW 95 and 98. They both were nice, and what got me started, but to be honest, graphics aside, and maybe a few nice navigational goodies added, I didn't feel any huge jump in difficulty. You know, you could set the realism settings down on the default stuff, and you can get by very well with it.
To say, proper Flight Simming as a genre is NOT dead. It may be harder to get it at a physical store, and then your best source is to get it digitally (like via Steam), or it will be on a community supported basis as an open source/freeware project (like Orbiter.)

Re: Great Disappointment in Microsoft Flight
I bought FSX 2 years ago but found that addons for it were actually pretty scarce as compared to FS9. But then I sticked to it anyway. I'm gonna try out MS Flight soon. Hope it will be more fun
