Hello there, whilst I was at Sumburgh (Shetland) a week or two ago, I was photographing planes (Saab 340s) from the gate as they land/take off across the main/only road north to Lerwick.
The guy at the gate was telling me that a handful of other airports worldwide still also have a public road across the runway, but couldn't remember where. I know Prestwick did it until they built the ring road in the '60s for example, but I am wanting to know where still does it these days. Any info would be great, as I'm curious now, thanks. I remember Faro and Gibraltar have roads that cross the runaway.

No, the Northlink ferry from Aberdeen and then a bus from Lerwick.
More time to get pished on the over night ferry via Kirkwall you see! Amen to the MV Hrossey. ![]() Last edited by Roarer; 07-19-2008 at 10:31 PM. |

Indeed, Gibraltar does, all traffic stops whenever a plane takes off or lands, since this is only 4x a day, not a huge deal...

I assume that if they ever were to build a road round, then they would have to fill in the sea round the end of the runway. Much simpler to leave it as it is methinks. Anyway, there must be other places out there too surely?? At Sullom Voe, the runway doesn't cross the road, but there are flashing lights to stop traffic when something takes off\lands, presumably because they go over so low. Indeed, I would imagine.
gibraltar is a small country and I guess that they don't have the money or need to fill in the sea anymore. Anyone know if the roads crossing make you ineligible for IATA? |

Bizzarrely, with my pics of Sumburgh, although the weather and light was a bit rubbish most of the time, what I have noticed is that, the pictures of planes landing/taking off seem to be in focus, yet the ones of things taxiing seem to be just that little bit off.
The ones in focus are going faster that the ones that are slightly soft??!! I'm a bit confused over that one as you can imagine! Will post them up somewhere soon. Also I got pictures of things such as the fire tender - there I was walking across and it was parked by the roadside whilst one of the guys was out strimming the edges of the grass.
