Hi Everyone,
I hope this is the right place to post this thread. A couple of years ago I was given a fantastic collection of Photographs showing mostly Navy Golden Era aircraft. This collection belonged to a Mr. Doughty who was a Naval Aerial Photographer in the 1930's. After Mr. Doughty died, the collection was given to his grandson, who has had the collection stored in his garage for many years, in Southern California. While my family was on vacation to Southern California, about 3 years ago, we visited my friend and at that time he asked me if I wanted some airplane pictures to sell on ebay. I said sure, and he gave me two old black photo albums and a box of loose photographs. After the vacation, I took out the photographs to see what was there, and discovered this great collection of aviation history, among other things. I decided it had too much historical value to break up and sell, so I put the collection on the internet to share with everyone. Here is a picture of Mr. Doughty with his camers. ![]() The camera is almost half as large as he is. Imagine leaning out over the side of a biplane with the wind rushing past and trying to take a good picture with that camera. What would happen if they hit an air pocket? ![]() I have been contacted by a couple of renound aviation historians that told me the collection is one of the major collections, of that era, on the internet. Another historian sent me the Histoy Cards and Maintenance cards for the aircraft that I could identify with the BuNo. These cards tell where the aircraft was assigned on a certain date. The maintenance cards tell what has to be repaired after a crash. This is great historical information. Here is a photograph of a Grumman F3F-1 Fighter. ![]() This aircraft crashed while doing dive bombing exercises and the Pilot was killed. Pictures of the crash scene are included in the collection. I do not have a lot of money to promote my website Exciting discovery of a collection of over 350 original photographs, many unseen before, of Naval aircraft, plane crash sites, ships of the fleet, Admiral Byrd Antarctic Expidition II and many other subjects, all taken in the 1930's - Welcome To Old , so I am visiting the different aviation forums trying to get the word out. If anyone would like to help me promote my website by telling their friends, that would be appreciated. I have made the photographs large to show detail for reference. My visitors can right click and copy the photographs to their hard drives, for their personal enjoyment. All I ask is that they not be used for any commercial purpose without my permission. Lee |

I like the F3F from VF-6B Felix Squadron, one of my favorite mascots. You probably need to go to either the 1/1 aircraft or 1/1 military aircraft section to display these pics on DAC. I for one would love to see these old photos.

I Think That View Camera Prolly Uses 8X10 Glass Plate, But It Appears To Have A Removable Film Magazine. The Bellows Is Covered With A Housing.
Anyone Know For Sure? |

Hi L-1011-Heavy,
I quote from George Carroll "Eyes of the Navy" Chapter 3 "The first Fairchild roll film (5 x 7) F-1 aerial cameras were handcranked between each picture exposure to advance the film and re-set the between-the-lens shutter. The roll film used in these cameras was good for about 50 pictures." Here is a link to this excellent article on Naval Photography.
