I have been wondering for sometime now. Which scale has been around longer and which scale has more variety of airplanes and airlines to its name. 1:500 or 1:400? I have a collection of about 48 1:500 planes mostly herpa wings. ALthough my goal is to someday have 500 models. It would be nice to have them be all the same scale but i wonder if there are that many 1:500 models out there? Is it normal for someone to switch it up a bit and add some 1:400 models in their collection? How many of you actually do this and also how does it look if you place them into an airport diorama?

Well, 1:500 was the first scale introduce by Herpa in 87, and brought out in 91-92 I think (in plastic first!).
1:500 is nice, but 1:400 is more detailed and of course more expensive (but not everytime). I have more that 100 1:500s, but recently bought 4 1:400 planes and they are fantastic!

Well, in the US, I think 1:400 has been dominate since 2005 when herpa started spewing out crap in 1:500 and scared everyone to start collcting 1:400 where the choices are greater. So here, I'm sure 1:400 is more popular.

As far as I know, 1:500 is more popular in Europe and Japan but 1:400 will be the one to go in the US.

I remember standing in the hobby shop on the viewing terrace at LHR in 1999 looking at the 1:400 and 1:500 scale models. I had pretty much decided to start a collection of 1:500 but this was the first time I had seen 1:400 and they were superb compared to those (horrid) Herpas! I decided there and then that 1:400 was the way to go and have not looked back.

i started with a malaysian 747-400 1-600 schabak from dubai airport duty free only because i didnt know anything else existed , then i found herpa 500 at my local hobby shop and out with the schabak in with herpa then i discovered ebay and 1-400 and now going for #300 , i will always collect only 400 scale now but have just bought 2 1:200 models from ebay , i wont ever venture into 1:200 because of there size , just the cathay pacific and air hong kong liverys were very tempting many of which i also have in 1.400 scale , but the 200s will be used more for display whereas the 400s will be locked away,

I am a 1:500 collector, though I have 6 other models of which 4 are 1:400.

Go with 1.400 there the best. And don't stick different scales in with each other because people will see a 1.400 747 next to a 1.500 747 and be muddeled then wonder wether there were to sizes of the 744

If you know what you're doing, you can actually do a mix. What you'll have to do is something sort of like a optical illusion. What you would do is have 1:500 in one part of the airport, and 1:400 on another part. Granted, you won't get every model you want on it, but it can look pretty damn good too.

Like I have been saying more and more lately, collect what you like (I mean this more in the literal sense than the model political sense). If one scale has something you want, but the one you primarly collect dosn't, no one to my knowledge is forcing a AK 47 with a beonet(sp?) attachment to your head, so get it if you want.

I only collect 1/400 models

I started off with the Corgi/Lintoy airliners, Dinky aircraft and also Dyna-Flites in about 1972 as a 2 year old. I also got an Airfix Air Canada L1011 for christmas in 73 or 74. I still have most of them. I was never too keen on Herpa and started collecting 1/400 when GJ came out and have too many models now.
From a detail point of view, I would go for 1/400 but with Herpa, StarJets(if u can find any), and IF500 there is still some choice models out there in 1/500 land. Its a personal choice I guess.
