Out of the three listed aircraft which one had the most & biggest influence in revolutionizing the modern air travel?
Please, vote. Thanks.

For some odd reason, I can't vote in this poll, I don't know why.
I probebly would've gone with the Boeing 707. Even though we had planes like the Comet in service by then, the Boeing 707 is usually reffered to as the plane that officially kicked off the Jet Age. It also started to bring air travel more to the masses than a select few, as was the case in the past, and the planes that followed it in Boeing's commercial line helped continue that tradition.

ill have to say the 707.....like LOT said, it is refered to as the plane that started the jet age (even though the Comet and Tu-104 were in service before it and the DC-8 shortly after) and its influence is still phisically preasent with the 737 series which features the same cabin cross-section and nose design. yes, the 747 really brought the playing field to the next level, but without the 707, would there have ever been a 747? sure the jet-age was already started and there was not a chance that it would decline, but the 707 really helped it along...

The Concorde (and the Tu-144) was the beggining of a new era, that will restart in the next years: the supersonic commercial era!

The 707. Everything since has been based on this plane!

Without A Doubt, The 707. It Took Air Travel Out Of The Dark Ages & Kick Started The Dawn Of The Jet Age. Many Aircraft To This Day Are Influenced By It. 707 s Are Still Flying In Military Examples & They Have Been The Backbone Of Many A Fleet For Decades. Until The Success Of The 747, The 707 Was On The Tip Of Everyones' Tongue, Long After Douglas, Convair, Vickers, Dehavilland & Sud Aviation Proved Themselves.
707 Is Still Spoken Of With Reverence Today. It's A Shame Many New Collectors Can't Appreciate The 707 Compared To The Modern Twins That They Love So Much. I Consider Myself Privelaged To Not Only Have Lived Through This Era, But Actually Travelled On Them As Well As Spot Many. |

Well, I know that you can still get a chance to ride on one of these good ol' ladies. You can 1) somehow manage to get into Iran and fly on the Saha Air 707s or 2) I remember hearing the Argentinian AF operates its own civil airline and they fly around in 707s. I'm not sure if the latter is operating still, but the first of the two should be operating.

I think we couldn't answer it so easily... Every plane had a big influence, but in several times and decades!!
The 707 (also the DC8) had a big influence for his decade (end50s to end 60s), the Jumbo is a so called next generation aircraft for the 70s and 80s, with perhaps more influence on later planes (together with the L1011 and the DC10). The Concorde is a proof of what people could do! It was the biggest technical challenge of the second generation (end60s and 70s). |

Yes and no. Boeing was going to do it but shelved the idea and went with the 787 instead. but there are a few Biz jet manufacturers that are going ahead with the program. I have an old AWST(Avaition Week and Space Technology) issue that discusses this if I find it I will post the article.

<-----My mistake. It was Popular Science March 2007. Lockheed Martin is developing supersonic biz jet. projected first filght is slated for 2011. it will have a 2 crew 12 passenenger configuration with a range of 4600 miles. estimated costs are $2.5 billion for development and $80 million per aircraft.

Absolutely the 747.
The 707 was definitely the most successful amongst the early jet aircraft but it was not the originator of the concept of moving people quicker by air. Let alone the TU-104, no one can ever tell what might have been of the 707 and DC8 had the unexpected not occurred to the Comet in early 1950s. The Jumbo Jet was instead the first plane that introduced the idea of mass transportation by plane. The Concorde was too much ahead of its time, more or less like the obscure VFW-614. |

And we must not forget Tupolev's try at it, the Tu-444 (a Bizjet as well). But either way in my opinion, these won't have much influence on air travel unless we somehow all become capable of affording flights on bizjets. This is why I don't really think the Concorde had much influence on air travel.

the good old 747. It has changed travel. It can take huge amounts of people faster than what the 707 ever could.

Actually, a lot of research is going on for hypersonic, sub-orbital airliners, and for dirigibles, believe it or not. A dirigible can carry over a thousand people, and be over three hundred metres long. These would be used as cruise liners for those interested in that sort of thing...New York to London or Paris in 36 hours, luxury suites and great food, entertainment. It's an idea that's been kicking around for awhile.

The 707 made the biggest difference in our perception of the world; Suddenly, a person could go anywhere on earth in a day! The 747 just made it more affordable.

The 707. Of the three listed to poll from it is IMO the one that paved the way for the other two.

The 747 Claim Is Low Cost Fares & Large Volumes, But The 707 Took Air Travel Out Of The Dark Ages So To Speak & Introduced The Jet Age. Remember The 707 Was Twice As Fast & Carried Twice As Many Passengers Than Propliners. And Without The 707, We Wouldn't Have The 747 As The 747 Is Based On The 707. Brilliant Alias & DC-8-55 Make A Good Points Too. |

The 747 was the aircraft that opened up air travel to the masses. Without it, air travel would possibly still only be exclusive to those with the financial means to do it - at least on long distance routes. It's very unlikely that airlines would have been able to thrive in the manner they have without the 747. One only has to see how many companies have relied on the 747 since its introduction as the basis of their long-haul fleets to illustrate my point. Additionally, it is the 747 that has had the greatest impact on the growth in the air cargo sector. Without the existence of the 747F, this segment of an airline's business plan would never has "taken off" in the manner that it has - something that the 707 would never have been able to accomplish.

Yes Agreed On All Points. Somehow, I Think The 707 Wins Though. It Still Paved The Way For The Bigger Jets. The 77 BTW May Not Have Come To Light As We See It Though. It Was Desingened For The USAF As A Large Cargo Transport In A Bid That Lickheed Won With The C-5. The 747 As We Know It Would Not Have Been Designed At That Time As A Passenger Aircraft. Boeing Modified The Design & Had An Eventual Runaway Success With The 747. Had A "747" Been Designed For Passengers It May Have Been DC-10/L-1011 Sized With 4 Engines Or Possibly Designed Similar To The 727 & Probaqbly Not Have an Upper Deck. Purely Speculative Of Course But One Thing Is Definite: Boeing Would Not Have Designed A Passenger Airlin |
