Guys:

We have upgraded the forum software to version 3.5. The different modules we use have not been upgraded to work with this version yet. One of these modules is Trader Ratings. We will put it back up as soon as a stable version and migration procedure are released. The data has not been lost!

Separately, we are currently having some minor server problems that we have been able to fix rapidly - however, that also means that our visitors are experiencing some minor outages.

We would like to apologize for any inconvience.

IMO no need to apologise. Just as long as DA.C doesn't go all together!

I'm glad to ear that the data has not been lost, thanks for your quick answer and good luck to resolve all the problems with the new server.

We work hard to keep our sites on-line! Sometimes the systems don't cooperate, as in the case a few days ago. For some reason the system halted, when it came back up after a reboot the web server and mail server refused to start. A quick recompile of apache (the web server) and a upgrade of the server maintenance software bought everything back on-line. We were only down for about 45 minutes.

As for backups/data loss, we are protected... Each night the working directories and databases for all sites are copied off of the main hard drive and backed up to a separate hard drive. This prevents loss from hardware failure, so we have complete backups on a separate hard drive.

After the main backup is complete all the files from the backup hard drive a synced with another server in a different data center (physically different buildings and about 1000 miles apart). This gives us 100% backup every day, backups at 2 locations. And from time to time we download those backups to our hard drives and store them on DVD ROMS (YES the sites are that big).

If a major outage should arise, the maximum data loss would be about 1 day.

Question

You guys ever actually restore the data after a major crash? I can recall a few horror stories about IT shops that religiously backed up their data but never bothered to verify if those backups could be used to restore. In one case, several days of production was lost costing several hundred thousand dollars and in another, none of the data was recoverable after a crash which cost them millions.

I've used these stories several times in persuading management that, yes, the database and web server farms can be taken off-line while these restore scenarios are tested.

Actually a few weeks ago we had to restore all of DAC and some other directories due to some issues. No problems arose. I know what you speak of as I work in the IT industry. Fortunately, the backups are stored as flat files rather than in some huge mystery format or tarball. In a worst case scenario we can actually restore the database and home directories by hand, leaving only oddball things like linked directories, email accounts, forwarders, url redirections, etc to be setup by hand.

With that said we backup 4.4 GB of data.... this does include lots of odd stuff such as autoinstallers, email accounts, and some other non diecast related sites for personal use..
