I usually just use artwork from books, photos, slide scans, larger decal sheets, and other references and make a collage of material. Rarely do I draw, but if I have to I will. Essentially, the hard part is cropping, scaling, and cleaning the graphics so in the end they look decent.

The printer I use is an ALPS MD-5000 which prints up to 2400dpi and uses dry ink. I use high quality decal paper from the Micro Mark corporation which can run a pretty penny, but is worth the dollar. It is durable, clean, and very easy to manipulate using decal softeners and setting solutions.

The models are cleaned using laquer/enamel thinner which I find much more "stink" friendly than nail polish remover. The models are always taken apart when I am removing the original printing. The wing body and section is removed, along with the tail. This allows easier methods of tampo-print removal.

The decal process is like any other. After the decaling is done, I let it set and dry for about 3 hours, and then spray a heavy clear laquer coat.

One thing about decaling, is I always use distilled water. Tap water varies in mineral content and chlorine content. Some decal material will yellow if tap water is used. Distilled water is pure and eliminates chances for yellowing. Drinking water such as Evian will also do since it has been filtered (or so they say

I can print you a sheet if you like. I don't want to start sending out artwork. It takes too damn long to make, and I like to keep it in house if you know what I mean.

The sheet will have the entire artwork, with the tail. You will have to find a cockpit decal or when cleaning a model, spare the cockpit such as the model I did. It was a spare Sabena 747 I had. Since there is no color around the cockpit, it was easy to mask off while I gave the rest of the model a face lift

A good 747 to use for custom work is the China Airlines Cargo 747. Since it is predominately white.

Mark, could I use these same decals on a 757? Or would it be easy for you to make them smaller to accomodate a 757. If not, don't worry, I will use a 747. Do not want to cause you any trouble.

Some of your BEST work Marc! VERY impressive! ...but WHAT do you use to take the models apart? I've wanted to "convert" a couple of my GJ's into "inflight" mode after their gear met with accidents. I can't get the gear out and nothing I can find as a solvent will budge them! I thought about acetone, but am afraid to mar the finish.

I actually flew from PHX to HNL on the 747 several times when they had that route. And the AW signs were still at the HNL airport just last year.
