Default Nail polish remover question

Just a quick question...

Will nail polish remover eat into the plastic parts (i.e. engines, or Herpa tail fin, etc) of a 1:400 model at all? I'd prefer not to find out the hard way....

I have used nail polish remover to remove tampo printing but never tried it on plastic. The stuff does vaporize fairly quickly so that would help the situation.

Best way to find out is to try it on a scrap piece of plastic...styrene or otherwise.

Nick, The type of nail polish remover that I have, doesn't work at all.

Where do I buy the right stuff ? For example, what's the name of that you are using ?

There are different kinds of remover. You have to get the stuff that has acetone in it. All drugstores have it. I think I used 'Cutex'.

I honestly don't know. I do know that styrene is the type of plastic used for model kits such as those made by Hasegawa and Minicraft.

Yeah, I'm actually a bit of a plastic kit convert. I was really into them until a few years ago when I moved out to Hawaii, where space is at a premium, so my 1:400 collecting started gaining momentum again. However, I do plan on getting back into plastic kits when I move back to the mainland around the end of the year.

BTW, it does look like the nail polish remover will eat into the plastic a little bit. However, I think if you keep the contact to a minimum, it may not be noticeable. But that's more risk than I feel like taking with this model, so I'm just going to paint over the engines. And if you're curious.... I'm working on converting a 1:400 Herpa Niki A320 into Northwest new colors and a GJ USAir 727-200 from 1980s colors into 1990s colors.

You know, with a little careful effort, you can remove plastic parts from your model without breaking them, then glue them back when you're done.
