Default R/C Airliners ... anyone doing it?

I stumbled across this site moments ago, and I was mesmerized by the quality of flying reproductions these guys have created in 1/16th scale.

Check out this site, especially the top eight (8) photos of the MD-11 section featuring the KLM model flying ... it's unbelievable!!!

I'm rather surprised they don't have a flying 747 model though ... seems odd ... but otherwise, it's amazing stuff!

Wow, that thing is huge. If they produced 8, then storage must be no issue for them. I wonder if it needs its own registration because of it's size.

And the video showed the A380 taxiing, taking-off and landing too! Either the model is pretty light or it has really powerful turbines.

Thanks for sharing! The Concorde model looks almost like the real thing, especially with the chase planes to boot ... the landing was perfect ... looked even better on a real runway as opposed to grass as in the other two videos. I'm getting inspired watching these to learn how to build/fly large scale airliners now ... anyone wanna team up on a Dreamliner model?

QUESTION: Does anyone here know how to fly R/C models at all?

If YOU were a passenger on this plane ...

... it would be known as "The Flight from HELL"!!!

holy crap! now this is a cool hobby!

i wonder how much it takes to buy/build such a machine!!! also, how much fuel(?) does it consume and how much flight time?

the reason i ask is, once i saw this R/C helicopter on late night tv commercial that only had 5 mins of flight time per charge...

is this legal in U.S.? i mean, this is a missile with wheels! holy cow!!! super fast!!!

In 1995 I scratch built an RC B-17. I never tallied up the final cost but just to give you some idea, (this is 1995 pricing) $125.00 of balsa and light plywood, 4 OS MAX 4 stroke engines @ $150.00 each, Futaba six channel radio $300, extra servos $100.00, Robart retracts $99.00. I don't know how you would put a price on the three years it took to build it. Lots of glue, resin and fibergass to build and finish, a couple of hundred more. I got 15 flights on the model before I lost an outboard engine on takeoff and the airplane spun in and was a complete loss. No regrets, as anyone in the hobby will tell you, 15 flights on a multi-engine model is considered very good. I beleive this model had a 51 inch wing span. The model had four 6 oz fuel tanks and the average flight was 15 min, on full tanks all four engines ran close to 30 min. The models are legal although you have to join a club to get the AMA insurance to cover your *** in case your model crashes into someones house or car or God forbid another person.

I currently have a work in progress DC-3 that I am scratch building from Model Airplane News plans using engines and other hardware salvaged from the B-17 wreckage. The basic airframe and wings have been completed and retractable gear installed buts lots of work to be done yet.

The MD-11 posted here I would imagine is mostly styrofoam covered with balsa and glassed, a really beautiful job and I bet very very expensive.

I spoke once with the owner of Vali Aviation, a model co that produces 1/4 scale plans and semi-kits for mostly WW2 fighters. He said that to design, build and fly a proto-type 1/4 scale model( in this case a FW-190) requires an investment of approx $9,000.00. The production release could cost a customer anywhere from $1200 to $3000 to complete depending on how many "add ons" you want to invest in.

I have video of the B-17 flying but being a complete computer dummy I would have no idea how I would post it here.

Love all the pics and videos!

There is a six foot long commercial aircraft that I wanted to buy at a local hobby shop. The fuselage is styrofoam but looks great. When I asked about it, the man told me that they are not forgiving aircraft to fly. When I told him I was a beginner, he showed me the type of plane I should start as per the attached picture.

STEVEJ,

When I read your experience with the B-17, it confirmed to me that these planes are delicate, unforgiving and very pricey. If I do get into RC, the plane of choice will be something along the lines of the above pictured beginner aircraft.

There was a great video of a massive B-52, with all eight engines functional, looked like 1/12 or possibly even 1/8 scale...it was friggin' HUGE! It was in England, and the poor sot who owned it banked it too steep and it took a dirt dive. That was probably a suicidal moment for that guy.

Thanks, M1! That's a awesome video of the B-52 - love the sound of the turbines. Did anyone notice that when it landed, the mini landing gear under the starboard wing was missing? Must have broken off during the touchdonwn.

If you are using the new generation motors and building a large airliner I would figure the end cost to be low 5 figures. Too rich for my blood but I would LOVE to see that MD-11 or any other large airliner model flying around.

The B-52 has got to be my favorite...it sucked that it was destroyed. At @ $1500 for a jet turbine, he was out a considerable amount...it had retractable gears, and even nav lights. There's another awesome vid on a beautiful model of an A380, but I don't know where to access it.

His supersonic NASA-like take off and erratic rolling-like landing approach had me keeling over. Poor pax onboard were rolling in their vomit.
