Default Model building prt.2

Hey everyone! In this lesson you will learn how to, mask, paint-with-brush, undercoat & finish.

Masking: I will show you some techniques on how to mask. You will need a roll of masking tape of your choice.
To mask off lines i.e. on a wing, lets say you want to paint the gorogurad, you need to mask off the surrounding areas. If you are doing a Hasegawa kit(John), there are lines the seperate the goro. from the other parts. So this means you tape right on the line, like so...

For undercoats, I use Tamiya white primer from the can. This stuff works really well, and its very sturdy.

For a finishing coat, I use Future floor wax. It seals it excellent and gives it a very nice shine. Or, if you want a dull and not shiny coat, use Testors 'Dull Cote. You can also use Testors 'Gloss Cote' to, insted of the Future.

When brushing on the Future, use even strokes. Dont fill the brush up too much with wax, but just enough. Don't stroke over the parts that you already brushed. It usually takes about three coats to give it that shin and fully seal it.

Painting with a brush. A lof of you guys dont have airbrushes. Dont feel bad, painting the right way with a brush can give you the same effect of an airbrush!
Use a paint pallat. Put just enough paint in it. Take your brush and fill the bristles half way, then, brush even strokes with the brush. Brush from front to back. Dont overlap an already painted spot. Do as many coats as you need. Usa fat brush.

If you want, you can use paint cans. They are really effective too. I Painted my IL-86 with them & Zubart does all his work with them.

Weight. As a nose weight for an airplane, I suggest good old clay. Its a great product

Always have book or internet references.

Decals. If your decals have yellowing in them, put them in a Ziplock bag and tape them to a sunny window or car dashboard. After a couple of days, they will start to change back.

John, get this book!! It is the best modeling guide ever!!

Thanks for reading

Acrylic and Enamel. I like Tamiya and Gunze acrylic paints to brush on. You can get very nice results if you just take your time and do even strokes. Try to always paint in a forward motion, never painting over a wet spot on the model.
Humbrol Enamel paints are great. I personally would suggest Enemal brush-on for just high gloss colors, like red or blue, etc.

Hope this helps and good luck with your DC-10!
Do post progress shots

If you do thin coats and spread it out, it shouldnt be too "textury", but it will be more then if you were to spray from a can or airbrush. Enamel is also quite thick and can have a lumpy texture to it.

I suggest cans.

sorry, all of the hand-painted models have been discarded (all test models, I never intentionally meant to paint with a brush on a model). Actually, I may, just may, have one in the stash. I'll look for you.

Just get cans dude.

Looks like you know your modeling stuff Bill. Why don't you use an airbrush? Spray cans are a pain in the ***.

i COULD get cans but the thing is i'll brobably use a tiny bit of them then never use them again. not to mention they are a lot more expensive than little paint bottles of which i already have a few.

great thread of tips Bill...but FYI, it's coroguard, not goroguard...maybe a typo, but thought I'd pass it on.

ok... i've looked into spray paint.

in my basement i found some "Tremclad Rust Paint, with superior rust protection" in a spray can
and some "Tremclad primer, that inhibits rust" also in a spray can
and i also found some tiny 1/4 oz testors acrylic paints in little bottles.

and seen as i have nothing in the way of a dark navy blue, i think i'll get some of this stuff...
Testors Spray Dark Sea Blue 15042 3 oz

does this sound better?

Ted, I do have an airbrush. I use it for the small things like engines, wings, etc. I use cans to usually paint the fusalage as it is a big piece and requires a lot of paint (like white) most of the time.

Gargle, trust me, for your first time spraying a model (if it is), you will use a lot of paint from the spray can. It's really worth it.
I wouldnt use that Tremclad on a plastic model, probably not designed for that purpose. Always use the cans designated for scale modelling, like Tamiya or, as you have, Testors. A tip, Testors Light Gull grey from the can is a good color for wings and tail fins.

My pleasure Carlos. Yep, thats the book!

Cathay, yep, you did notice that. That was before I knew how to spell it (I had seen a lot of differnt of ways to spell it).

Bill-ay,

thanks very much for sharing... I surely want to give it a try and built my own models one day... if I ever get rid of my two left hands

But honestly, this thread at least gives me some basic ideas and a good book tip.

Cheers

Excellent guide, Billy.

Do you have any other tips for the colors of paint to use for the other surfaces of the model?

Thanks Horizon. I'm not so sure what your question is. Do you mean colors of the airlines or of the wings and stuff like that?
