Cool Help! Adding flaps on 1:400 models

Hello,
I am thinking of adding flaps onto some of my 1:400 747s for a display of landing aircrafts. I have seen some of those ANA Precision models made by Hogan with flaps, but don't really know what to start up with. Therefore I am here to seek some help Anyone have made these flaps before? or and ideas of how to make them? Thanks

I can't imagine that it would come out all that well considering you'd have to hack through metal wings to cut out the trailing edge flap sections.

I was thinking of that too, so far i have only seen custom made flaps for plastic kit models. I suppose you could form the flaps from plastic but on such a small scale they might bend out of shape when being cut. You could also try it on the plastic wings of Herpa/DW 747s but i also think they might bend out of shape.

Another suggestion would be to make customs using the ANA models.

What I am thinking is, to make some kind of "add-on" kit, that can just directly attach onto the wings without damaging them.

Or maybe as you guys said, choose those DW or Herpa models to work on as they have the plastic wings.

I have thought the same thing.
A few things to consider:
1) the flaps could be made of either plastic strips or solid card. Flaps in 1;400 are quite thin in comparison to the thickness of the wing. You could make a template for each type - obviously a 747 is going to require some work.
2) If you design the template right, you could attach it to the moulded flaps over the top of the moulded wings. Darken the existing moulded area to represent the flaps dropped and creating a shadow effect
3) You could butcher a DW model easier than most. Diecast cutting is way too ambitious for me.

Either way - good luck with that. Check the ANA precision thread with their 744's with the flaps down etc. It looks good if you get it right.

This looks very very tricky indeed, so best of luck. I've always wanted a model with lowered flaps, as this would be good for display on my diorama, but I'm not talented enough to start chopping bits off wings and fabricating my own flaps!

I thought that when PHX started making 'ground' and 'flight' versions of the 747-8, this may be the start of a trend that may possibly culminate in us seeing 'extended flap' versions...

actually not to bad, well done, but unfortunatly at this scale and on a metal plane they aren't going to get much better. If you really want flaps then you are going to have to go bigger and go plastic.

But keep working on it because it looks pretty interesting and suprisingly good..... James

Here is the addition of slats, flaps, and spoiler~

Hello James,
Yeah, I should have used DW models as they have plastic wings~ But unfortunately this is the only spared model I have. (This one has some manufacturer defects) I think it looks ok to me~ but could be better.

looks better with spoilers and slats. If you were able to succesfully cut out the flaps of a dragon wings plane then i reckon you could get it looking very good..... if you were willing to risk it though.

Its very good, well done.... James

Here are some better pics~ The pics I uploaded were bad as I only had an ipod touch available at that time~
Here are some retakes with a better camera

I think that the size of the flap might be too big~ But I was in a rush to finish it lol~
(Left Taiwan the second day)
So yeah~ Hope you guys like it

That came out much better than I expected. It does look better with slats and spoilers.

I'd be pretty happy with that, if I were you - especially for the first effort.
