Default WIP repainting my Skymarks VS744 into SQ 9V-SMZ 50th

Hi guys, i got myself a model 747 to repaint into the SQ 50th Anniversary colours with decals from Flying Colours. I just started repainting the engines and thought i might share some photos here.

I used Mr Hobby light gull grey for the engine cowling, Tamiya Gloss Aluminium for the cowling lip, Tamiya gloss black for the exhaust over painted with chrome silver from Mr Metal Colour. While polishing the chrome silver with a piece of tissue some of the chrome got into the glass black which gave it a nice look. Initially i wanted to paint that part with Tamiya Gun Metal. The engine fan blades are painted gun metal though.

Its not perfect but considering this is my first time trying, im pretty satisfied with the results. I will definitely do better for the next 2 engines. Comments are welcome!

Hi guys have completed some more work on this bird, here are the pictures

Stripping this virgin

Close up

Not so FABulous anymore, very dirty and smelly job

Here she is stripped of all paint, note that the tail is painted matt white

Even after clear coating the decal it still came off together with the Tamiya tape, very irritating. I completed painting the silver stripe of the tail before replacing it with another decal. Good thing i ordered 2 sets of these =D

And here she is in the current state. Gloss white body which was very hard to perfect, much sanding and painting, the coat looks good from a feet away but close up you can see all the bumps and mistakes.

The engine decals and winglet decals have been clear coated in Mr Clear UV-shield gloss. The leading edges have been painted in gloss aluminium

Comments are welcome as always, the body will be some hard work as the 50th anniversary colours is a little complex. Any tips on alignment of windows on such a big plane? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I used Mr Colour Thinner for plastic, this thinner will no strip the paint but leave the plastic unharmed. If you used the normal paint thinners it might melt the plastic =D

Some updates! I have finished applying the gold stripes. Should i apply a gloss clear coat before continuing? The decals were quite easy to work with although i had to patch some parts up as the curves were rather tricky. A few breaks here and there and of course the wing root curves causing some problems. Overall i am rather satisfied with my first conversion

That is looking excellent. I can't wait to see the results. Makes me want to try a project like this, but I would not come close to the results you are getting.

Hi PWJA380, i got the decals from flying colours decals(link below). I have just finished the windows and are doing the doors, should be able to finish up tonight. Many flaws and inaccuracies but i love this bird =D

A teaser shot (yes i know the top gold stripe is wayyy too long)

@PWJ A380, i have no idea, i never tried asking them though, i just found a 744 that was cheapest to get =x

@FLXMCT: Thanks man! She's beautiful ;]

Here she is, got some really unfortunate things happened that screw up a little. The nose gear wont go in fully and when i tried to squeeze it in using pliers it scraped off some paint at the bottom. I applied some gloss white followed by gloss clear but i'll have to leave it like this. On the plus side you can only see it when looking from bottom up!

I am really satisfied with myself. I could never have imagined this outcome when i first started as this was my maiden repaint attempt. A very good learning experience. The final thick gloss coat really made it shine like a gem. Hope you guys like her as much as i do! Actual pics from my camera later!

Thats sounds like a plan!! Would you do it both sides?? As the real one had was a BA/SIA hybrid.

I did one a while back... here's a pic

And the 742 i did a while back with the California decals on it. The decals were awesome to use!! Highly recommend it give it a go!

Wow thats very nice, did you make the concorde decals yourself? Btw how do you repaint a diecast model, do you take the wings/tail apart? or do you just mask them?
